I think the premise is fantastical and removed from reality, but I will admit it is hitting a real emotional nerve with some of the reactions I'm seeing. If Plemons is supposed to be the right-wing militia boogaloo guy I'm interested in how he protrays it, of course it won't be sympathetic but if Plemons is content to rip off Phillip Seymour Hoffman for the rest of his career I could see him playing a realistic misfit emboldened by power. I don't know why drumpfies and other conservatives would be angry about it, if anything it's a concession by Hollywood that they are now a major sociological force that has to be addressed with nuance for it to be believed by the general audience.
The guy doing it wrote Annihilation which was a pretentious slog of a sci-fi film, but at the very least there will be some effort put in. Curious to see.
