Many people will seek credit for success, but few will accept responsibility for failure.

How did that apply to the situation?

it didn't whatsoever, pleading with the robbers saying it's a low level game already gave the impression that while the situation was tense, sunshine was still trying to play cool. A random JFK quote about accepting responsibility for failure doesn't make any sense in this context.

JFK said "success has a thousand fathers; failure is an orphan" - called it an old saying. It was in reference to The Bay of Pigs.
          https://www.presidency.ucsb.edu/documents/the-presidents-news-conference-213

          Casper knew this.

Original quote is from Count Galeazzo Ciano (1903–44), an Italian fascist politician

Victory has a hundred fathers, but defeat is an orphan.
literally ‘no-one wants to recognise defeat as his own’
          Diary (1946) vol. 2, 9 September 1942

I hearby take credit for all failures: past, present, and future.
        Especially my own birth.

There. Now you can never honestly say there's no one to blame for a tragedy.
        I am that man.

        It didn't, that's the joke

I think there's an added layer to the joke actually. The quote he makes before being shot is from Hamlet, and is said by Polonius, who is a kind of a dottering old man who dispenses a lot of advice to Hamlet but is kind of a rambling old man, and he get killed in the play just like the guy gets shot.

Successful people had lots of support growing up and many positive role models to teach them skills and guide them on the right path. Failures were more than likely abandoned at birth and never knew their parents.

Everyone cops to their successes, nobody claims their failures. Basically dont listen to anybody who only brags about what they've accomplished because they're not tellin you the whole story. They're not as good as they're trying to appear

When something goes well, people want to associate with it; so they will enhance their own personal contributions to the overall success of the project.

But when things get screwed up, everyone minimizes their own participation; and eventually most claim to have never heard of the project.

It's a very true axiom, and happens in the real world all the time

This. Success didn’t literally have 100 fathers (impossible) but if Success’s mother was sleeping with 100 men, any of one them could be the father and it’s simpler to say Success had 100 fathers. If I say Quentin Tarantino had 100 fathers it’s a figure of speech, I’m just referring to the fact that his mother was a prostitute.
