Was the first Avengers really "woke"? I mean there was female and black superheroes, the one scene of the Holocaust survivor, but that was really it. At the very least you could say the script was written by one straight white man instead of a herd of Black person women and gays.

actually by the time ROTK was released the total cost of the trilogy was $281 million. Peter Jackson was very sneaky and spent most of the planned budget on FOTR, knowing it would need to be a hit for him to get the remainder done properly.

The extra money isn't for making a better sequel. It's for giving everyone bigger paychecks and for making sure your fly-by-night tertiary studio gets signed on for something not needed that you source out to india to reduce the your own costs, creating even higher returns for yourself.

None of those movies cost 200+. The majority of work is done in green screen warehouses with minimum wage film crews and CGI by literal slave shop Indian production companies. This. They get expensive fast. If you're a virgin incel neet loser you can do quicky sessions with some escorts and it's cheap but really a chad alpha wants at least an hour. And an hour isn't enough. So it quickly gets very very expensive. You can guarantee this is where all the money is going. High class escort agencies also operate under front organisations like charities and vague service industries etc so it likely appears on the books as something innocuous.

Elemental is probably the one where it's obvious where the budget went tho.
The art design is odd but it's probably one of Pixar's most complex animations. Everything is dynamic, water is constantly flowing, fire moving. Not a single shot in the movie can be static, there's animation every second, and not only that, but the elemental character's are interacting with the environment constantly in complex ways. Particularly water.
The animation on display is obviously expensive. The writers room sadly lacks the talent of the animators, and the movie is still a mediocre remake of Look Who's Coming For Dinner.

        Anonymous

This. Compare it to Mario and you can see what Pixar spends their money on. Mario was all the animation prowess anyone asked for. Pixar used to push the envelope as part of their brand, but it's far past the point of diminishing returns.

                >john cena

Now you are just speaking from ignorance. Elemental is a really really gorgeous movie, again you can atleast see where the money went on screen.
Wait until Jones comes out and we get to see a over the hill actor read bad dialogue well showing active contempt for the people watching him.
That is a worth wild thing to outright hate because the "who gives a frick" attitude shines through, Elemental has some obvious talent being dragged down by it's worse parts.

Big studio system is collapsing. Indie movies are also in trouble because American indie directors in USA are also overinflating their budgets (latest Ari Aster is prime example). There are a couple of good ones, Safdies, Sean Baker. Mainstream is dying. A24 decided to expand from distribution to being a full fledged studio because they have their hands on the pulse. I assume NEON is also going to do that, if they haven't already (NEON is the main competitor of A24, they focus a bit more on distributing foreign films, and their had a big get with Parasite).
Think what you want, but I think that's for the better.

        Anonymous

A24 isn't doing too good either, sure their movies are cheap but an overwhelming majority of them were shit and never made back the investment and were quickly forgotten

          Anonymous

A24 is still mainly distributing. Even Everything Everywhere All At Once - quite a hit - wasn't actually produced by them.
Ctrl+F "Also produced" here https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_A24_films , and it's only 64 films. But you can see how the amount is increasing. Most upcoming movies are already co-produced by them.
Also "quickly forgotten" is not much of an argument when we talk about indie and how many of them actually flopped is an open question, I guess I can check it right now.

Quickly forgotten is also a very dishonest metric, a company isn't going to flood social media after a movie has come out and "organic" conversation about films sure as shit doesn't happen online.

Stop making franchise sequels, reboots, remakes, and comic book garbage. Chinese and Indian audiences would watch these movies because they clamor for anything American with explosions, but the majority of people outside of those countries don’t want this. The American film industry needs to rethink its priorities and start funding more mid-budget, smaller pictures. Hollywood learned a similar lesson with the musical and epic genres in the 60s. I see a second New Hollywood on the horizon.

You're a pinko moron. Actors get paid for the relative value they bring to a project. It's not their fault the Federal Reserve has decimated the value of currency to where a $5m salary 20 years ago is now $15m-$20m. It's not because of your homosexualy nebulous "le greed". Actors have standard quotes that the industry has determined they're worth. The price has risen because the USD is increasingly becoming worthless.

People were never paid by "usefulness" but by how hard it is to replace them.
You can't really replace a movie star. Movie star can lose their star power, and another star can emerge, but it won't be a direct replacement, because by definition a star is a specific person.
And non-star actors don't get paid that much.

You are talking as if endorsements weren't a thing which is basically your angle here
But no real business is paying robert downey junior 100 mil to promote their product, even if it gives a %100 return (And movies don't)
This only happens in the movie industry

No one is paying a SINGLE actor 100 mil. But these movies are filled with big names. And together they might get a salary of 100+ million.
Also, I myself don't give a shit about stars. But normies do. It is a fact of life. Most people like recognizable faces. To go "yeah i like that guy, gonna watch the movie". This is essentially human nature. No amount of wishful thinking can change that. This has always been the case, from the very beginning of cinema.

    Make good movies.
Something that connects with audiences while not being patronizing or agenda driven.
A movie that makes excited to see what's next should be the main drive here. None of these movies really do that.

This only happens with (1) or at most (2) writers who write a script away from the influence of moron execs and producers (on spec). 99% of everything made now is a moronic studio idea based on brand recognition that 5-10 different writers are then hired for. Development and rewrites go on for years and you end up with cobbled together Franken-slop that was soulless from the point of conception. It's like the difference between John Wick and the sequels.

I'm a feature screenwriter with 20 specs under my belt. Got a literary manager in 2021 but couldn't sell anything with the Covid BS still happening. Now it's the homosexual TV writer's strike ruining shit for everyone. I know I have at least 5 good movies already written, but the opportunity keeps getting kicked down the road. Wish I was born 20 years earlier.

Change your last name, but not legally, to some israeli like Schmidt or Goldstein at least as a pen name. I know it sounds memeish, but you're more likely to get results doing that.

Already working under a pen name lol, although it doesn't sound israeli. I have multiple scripts submitted to the biggest agencies and prodcos right now, but nothing can happen until the homosexualy strike ends.

This was literally the old model. half a dozen modestly budgeted films. A few will break even, a few will flop, and a few will be hits and be the payoff for the batch. Rinse and repeat and you get variety, interesting original movies, everyone wins.

Wasn't summer supposed to be the best season for movies?

  72. 10 months ago

Those are just 6 movies that flopped this summer so far. It's not even accounting for prior failures like Dungeons and Dragons, Ant-Man and Renfield, nor does it account for future failures like Aquaman 2 and Blue Beatle and even the new Dreamworks.

Hollywood is just a bloodbath this year and I have no idea how they're gonna respond because most profitble movies are still franchise films (Guardians 3, Mario). They might just double down on the same shit and waste billions more next year.

      Anonymous

the Kraken movie Dreamworks clearly doesn't care about
i assume they're banking on that Trolls sequel for the baby money
they also have a cartoon in development that is written by Charlie Kaufman, I assume they're banking on that one for the critical praise

      Anonymous

      >I have no idea how they're gonna respond
The same way they always do, by learning the wrong lesson. They'll say they need to be even MORE cautious and only make even more bland and derivative sequels and reboots. What they really need to do id make more lower budget films and focus on good storytelling and new ideas, while also getting away from the pants on head moronic practice of dumping films on streaming 7 minutes after they leave theaters. Make people feel like the only way to watch it for the first 8 months is in a theater.

        Anonymous

They definitely need to wait several months before putting a movie on streaming at least. Nolan was right to break relations with Warner after they put Tenet on HBO the same day. Just such a dumb fricking decision, do that for smaller scale films, not the big blockbusters

The answer is largely different for each of these.
Take Transformers for example. Maybe try making a movie that is about the robots in the title for once. 'Bumblebee' went a little more in that direction, and audiences seemed to like that.

Whereas Indiana Jones fricking 5, the answer is just don't make that movie. Consider spinning it off into a new character before you dust off Harrison Ford and prop him up in front of a camera again.

Jurassic World 3 is an anomaly of nature. I think audiences were just extremely bored when it came out and they would have watched paint dry. Half the dinosaur scenes aren't even in the theatrical cut and its more about giant locusts than it is about dinosaurs. The only reason I can think of why it made so much money is because it wasn't woke and audiences are so desperate for anything that isn't pushing THE MESSAGE that they put up with a bad movie as long as there were a few dinosaurs in it.
