Superhero Comics

For a genre that completely took over the medium in one of the major industries, there aren't that many worthwhile reads. It's been 85 years since the arrival of Superman, and there are probably no more than 100 good cape comics, even after stretching the definition of "superhero" to its very limit.
Do you agree or disagree, and why?

No one gives a frick about comics. Shockvalue trash for lowest common denominator. DC and Marvel which is why it’s all awful.

Superhero comics are supposed to be episodic, the 80s fricked it all up by having "le epic deconstruction" Stand alones and "le epic Meta multiverse events"

It started in the late 60s when Stan the thief and Jack the hack Kirby went all in on "buy this comic to know about the other comic goyi....err I mean true believers".

Stan Lee was a thief and Kirby couldn't write to save his life.

They would have died a long time ago if they remained episodic. Dammit.

        That's kind of the point

The moment the episodic format stopped being reliable due to cultural and technological changes, superhero comics started to die out, with the "deconstruction" and "events" , Bruce Timm and 90s edgy phase and Marvel's 00s Bendis era being desperate attempts at slowing it down

Now they don't really have anything to slow down it's death anymore so we are seeing an outdated Format retiring

The Kirby stuff and the 80s are pretty much the peak of the genre though.
Why do you think that these are the ones that are copied and referenced so often now?

Hero comics in general are about Hero worship. People see a character they like (for whatever reason) and latch onto said character. It's very much a genre of favorites where standard "good writing" can lead to lasting sales without a need to do anything that damn good. Case in point, I like the Spectre and so long as his books aren't complete shit (or they change him to Hal Jordan for some reason) I'll read them.

Books like "The Dark Knight" and "New Frontier" are exceptions, not the rule.

I've never been able to charactergay aside from Spider-Man when I was a kid/early teen. That went away really fast in my mid-teens.

Do you think modern superhero comic book writers hate their audience?

No, but they've made the stupid assumption that the brown-nosers hanging around on twitter are their audience, not the toxic neckbeards that got them all where they are today nor the quiet masses that don't bother with this social media bullshit and just pick up the books or dump them without making a production out of it.

I hope you're wrong. I'm pretty sure I've seen Millar say otherwise.
