Smallville already showed how to properly portray characters like Superman and Lex in the modern world but the movies always frick it up.
At his core he's an ideal, an inspiring aspiration, from a totally different time. Why James Gunn is going tot totally get it wrong, because he's not going to do that with a white male character without injecting a ton of bullshit.
He's too powerful. When your character can literally do anything, the story loses meaning and doesn't hold tension. This forces every story to revolve around kryptonite and it gets repetitive.
That only matters if the plot is about the resolution of between powerful foes. If it’s fundamentally a comedy or a romance movie it doesn’t really matter as mych.

So then make The Death of Superman picture with a tone and style on the nose of Rocky 4, Think Taxi Driver and King of Comedy is to Joker what Rocky 4 would be to this hypothetical Death of Superman. Especially the sound track, you have to nail the sound track and score. Have two appropriately swole actors get bigger and really focus on making each of the punches feel like the world is ending rather than a bunch of gay flying and typical superhero fighting. Nah its gotta be pretty much beat for beat comic accurate for the last act, the fight. The last few pages describing how the shockwaves from their final desperate punches shattered buildings really needs to hit. Rocky 4 originally ended with Drago and Rocky both dying as a metaphor for a potential war between the US and the Soviets. The audience has to be exhausted by the time Doomsday crokes.
