Here's my take: Adult Swim hosted subversive content for years like Robot Chicken and Tim & Eric. The audience learned to hate a concept of reality that maybe never existed. Well, they grew up and realized they really didn't have an alternative, or they didn't have it in them to actually find one. A few diehards took the neoliberal pill and now listen to Office Hours religiously, but most millennials are floating, deracinated cynics.
Then Joe Pera Talks with You comes along, offering a Kaufman-esque hokey American authenticity that had been previously mocked by the same network and probably same producers.
I don't care for it. Feels like a giant scam. Just go out in the world if you want it. You won't find it on the internet, in diverse suburbs, or progressive cities, but it is out there, and I've seen it.
