Taika Waititi's Star Wars movie will be on new characters

"Look, I think for the Star Wars universe to expand, it has to expand," he tells us. "I don't think that I'm any use in the Star Wars universe making a film where everyone's like, 'Oh great, well that's the blueprints to the Millennium Falcon, ah that's Chewbacca's grandmother.' That all stands alone, that's great, though I would like to take something new and create some new characters and just expand the world, otherwise it feels like it's a very small story."

Unironically may be good if he actually tries to move away from existing characters and settings. The biggest problem with Star Wars, that predates Disney's acquisition although its gotten worse since, is how small a galaxy with millions of species and tens of millions of habitable planets feels, everyone seems to know everyone. While that may be believable at the absolute highest tiers of intergalactic business and politics it makes no sense for space proles and lumpens. Even if he doesn't stick to what we know as traditional star wars but stays away from what's been established then that is genuinely expanding the galaxy. Star Wars should be one of the easiest franchises to work with if you're genuinely creative because the canvas you can paint on is so big but most creative who have access to Star Wars have come up with derivative and unoriginal aesthetics, stories, and characters. We are never getting the EU back and Disney has permanently fricked the core plot of Star Wars in their Canon so these sorts of isolated Star Wars stories are the only thing I'm interested in until a male goyim (dont even care the race at this point) is running Disney

Yeah, completely ignoring everything that was built up in the past and acting like it never existed while throwing in nothing but quips and 80s music since the audience are zoomers who won't remember anything. Any hack can do it but for some reason he gets away with it but that's beside the point. The point is they gave him a film with no pitch or idea, but only because he's popular right now, just like Rian, Paddy, GoT guys, Josh, and Colin, Phil and Christopher, and look what happened.

It's possible he could do some side stuff, but I would make sure it is not directly connected to Star Wars itself.

I would rather see Blomkamp's version of a random Star Wars story. Chuckles Takatta there only wants to do commercial stuff, not actual decent scripts & stories...he's a coloring book director, not a great script dude.

They fricked up with the non-canon cartoon stuff, which just bogged it down worse with no actual expansion.

The books long before that wisely were limited to not go too far out, yet somehow are not canon while shitty cartoons are.

Can he make Disney money with some big one-off's of Star Wars? Yes...cookie cutter coloring book with disposable, uninteresting characters that are flat.

Can he actually expand Star Wars in real ways?

        >also with that attitude why even direct it?

It's the correct attitude. Thor was a c-lister in the comics until the movies. Most of his stuff is shit.

Star Wars fans would eat runny dog shit off a plate if you gave the shit yoda ears and a lightsaber

That was true ten years ago. But the thing is if you sell too much Star Wars brand dogshit eventually Star Wars becomes a brand of dogshit.

They told their audience to go away because they wanted a new one. They got what they wanted and now they want them back.

You're right, but every dumb move Disney makes shrinks that pool.

It could work. It's not a guaranteed kino but it's worth a look.
He better have raked them over the coals on his contract though. Because if this goes foul it will bite his future prospects.

On the contrary; such an approach leaves the legacy purer.

I don't like Waititi, but isn't he right on this one?
Maybe it's because I'm not a Star War fan, but it looks like 90% of the movies are about sand planet, snow planet, the jedi stuff and those 5 or 6 types of spaceships. Don't you get tired to see the same stuff over and over again?

As long as he doesn't self insert himself as a new character. I think its inevitable he'll be voicing an alien or something though. He won't be able to hurt himself

    > I would like to take something new and create some new characters and just expand the world, otherwise it feels like it's a very small story."
This is all true and it’s what Star Wars needs to continue as a franchise, however I hate all of his movies so won’t be watching this

Literally thank you. I have no problem with this, in principle.
Old characters done well >= new characters done well > new characters done shitty >>> old characters fricked up
The most likely frickup scenario is trying to create Planet Gay or where the rainbow aliens fight some metaphor for Trump, or something like that. "Haha I expanded the universe" no frick you. You made a moronic gay universe and shoehorned it into Star Wars so that you could pretend that Star Wars gay the whole time just like you.
The thing is, it's not like sticking to old characters is a safeguard against that kind of shit.
So yeah. Make some new stuff, and don't frick it up. Those are separate concerns.

Didn't Rian kill off a bunch of characters and not introduce anyone new (or at least nobody new that didn't die)?

Can Disney PLEASE stop hiring the worst directors possible for the movies?
Fricking BDH could make a better Star Wars film than JJ, Rian, or Taika.

Yep and her Boba Fett episode was literally the best AND only good episode of the entire show.

Here's the thing, if you make this movie, or any of the other movies that have been made that were called Star Wars, not as many people would watch them. Cause the stories are shit. You're using Star Wars as a marketing tool. Make something different for awhile. Try making good stories again. Respect the movies goer's money and time. Entertain them.

      >Thinking it is still about entertainment
Modern Hollywood is all about producing the most blatant neo-liberal propaganda possible, in order to extract as much free money from Larry Fink as possible, and putting the creative accountants to work embezzling as much of the ridiculously inflated production budgets as possible.

And I said, stop doing that. Respect me, or I'll just entertain myself. And their millions just like me.

Based. This is all I want from new star wars shit, take the universe you were handed and build it out, don't just make Episode IV again

No, Star Wars was ruined back in 1999. George Lucas ignored Timothy Zahn in favor of his dumb ass concepts.

    I dislike taika
from interviews i've seen of him it feels like he's always trying too hard to inject his "humour" into fricking everything and just comes across as annoying
it's not like i don't get nz humour im from there myself but christ he lays it on a bit thick eh
