It's a very common pairing in real life, both for friendship and relationships, while the reverse and other combinations are much rarer. The fact the writers went out of their way to prevent one from appearing on the show when statistically one would happen even by accident, tells you a lot about their mindset and goals.

Also another shot I love is a raining episode. Craig, JP, and Kelsey hit a crosswalk button. While the walk sign comes up time stops for them and the crosswalk becomes devoid of rain almost like this magical moment they can traverse a dangerous rainy street with heavy traffic.
It would probably do better, since many people refuse to watch anything with virtue signaling. But ironically, the show would also get cancelled sooner, because it can't use diversity as a shield and inflate its self-importance.
