Taylor/Nicola Titans

This is honestly one of the worst beginnings for a Titans book I've ever seen. The only ones worse than this is Lobdell's run and the 2008 Titans book. Taylor can't write worth shit, and Nicola's art here is some of the worst in her career (but it might just be the colorist as what little pencils I've seen seem fine?).

Those Titans United minis were 10x better than this garbage.

It's really sad that these characters are like in their mid twenties and still doing the same "we gotta be better then the JL shit". I swear this was never a problem until Rebirth.

Her last costume was a leotard and it was actually aesthetically pleasing.
        >relatively bland bodice due to shoulder pads having a lot going on
        >bodice still has different colors so it’s not TOO bland
        >the thin gold breaking up the purple parts on the lower half of her body
        >the gold and purple looks good together

Her TT one is just ugly to look at.
        >random cutouts on sides and shoulders
        >random fish scale texture at top?
        >the random arrow to make the bodice not bland
        >silver and purple doesn’t look good together
        >the hair braid is ugly

tbh if you took the random scaled part out for a more off the shoulder look and took the arrow away it would probably look 10x better. It would at least look more like Nightstar's outfit which Korygays would probably appreciate.

I agree and I'm not surprised we already have the return of JL on the horizon. Brother Blood? Seriously? Like they just did that in Titans and the tie in books. The writing is just as cringe as Nightwing, everyone's friends and saves each other just in the nick of time. No drama, all support, plus out of place sexual hints from someone who has no idea how 25 year olds talk. Ill give it 2 trades before a relaunch

Amazing how this Nicola Scott always draws women without any sexuality, all of them have trannie bodies, none of them have big breasts and fat ass, no sexy pose and she draws women and men with the same face and expression of that movie Smile. If she worked in the 70's with this style she would be unemployed, but who rules DC today are the gays, so...

Sorry didn't mean to repeat Winick, you already said '08. But Tim Sheridan's Titans Academy is easily the second worst Titans run ever, and it's horrifying that it's only the second, because it's really that shit.

BEGINNINGS. One of the worst BEGINNINGS of a Titans book.
Jurgens' Titans was just pure mediocrity especially at the beginning. 2008 Titans is Winick. Sheridan's beginning was mediocre and got worse as it went on due to having to shove 3 different books into one book.

                It's Little Barda

This was around the time Johns started to become obsessed with making ripoff characters in hopes of royalties as the Teen Titans cartoon was a guaranteed hit. He made a lot of ripoff characters for the One Year Later gap including her, Bombshell (Cap Atom), Zachary Zatara (Zatanna).

You’re not missing much, the majority of people there only show up for an arc or are in the background before dying or never being seen again. The left side of that pic in particular has it bad.

I was, actually. But Faeber took over some 20+ issues into the title, which isn't what OP was talking about. Grayson's Titans 99 started off comfy as frick. This book could use some toddler Lian eating fish sticks and crawling all over.

The villains sucked though. Who gave a frick about Goth.
The best she could do was gather a Titans “Injustice League” and call them Tartarus.

          Anonymous

Calling them Tartarus is smart tho
The Titans just don't have good enough villains to make a decent injustice league. Probably would've been better to have an arc of a character specific villain targeting the team before the last arc getting them together
And the Gargoyle arc is one of the better arcs in a modern Titans book, I find surprising nobody else has tried making him the Titans defacto reality warping villain.. Williamson should've used him instead of Slade and the GEB as the villains for Dark Crisis tbh

the 99 Titans series is utterly NOTORIOUS for it's executive meddling.

Devin Grayson was banned from using any of the classic Titan villains outside of a brand new version of HIVE. Hence all of the lame as frick new villains she had to use, plus being forced to use Vandal fricking Savage as her big bad. Not to mention being banned from referencing Kyle Rayner/Donna Troy's relationship until the backlash of the ship sinking got so big that DC was forced to address it, forcing Devin to explicitly write that Donna came back "wrong" due to Wally fricking West omitting all memory of Donna dating Kyle when WW had him reboot Donna's brain after she was rendered mindwiped by Dark Angel, because he was secretly jealous of Kyle. Something so beyond the pale that it was never mentioned ever again after the issue revealed it. Or the fact that she was forced to explicitly write Nightwing as a manipulative c**t, due to Batman editors being buttholes who were upset that they were forced to let Dick be a Titan again and how Chuck Dixon explicitly ignored Titans the entire time he wrote the book, even though it was a plot point that Starfire and Dick were roommates in Titans.

The only fricking reason Devin's run is well remembered is that she NAILED the characters of the original founding Titans and pretty much created the notion of the Titans being a friends simulator comic about the founders.

As for Jay Faeber, he got repeatedly fricked over with no Vaseline. Mark Waid/Grant Morrison in particular, due to Jay wanting to do multiverse shit with the Titans and Terra/Donna Troy, forced editorial to ban him (and all subsequent writers) from touching Hypertime because it was THEIR toy and only supposed to use to restore the garbage fricking silly Silver Age shit that Crisis rightfully flushed down the toilet like a stinky turd. Then there was the bullshit with the kids that were forced upon the book that were created by it's editor, who explicitly told Jay that the plan he was forcing on him was to phase out the Titans and have the kids be the "New New Titans". Or the garbage with Jessie Quick being a prostitute that scorched earth her entire character.

              Anonymous

Faeber came up with Jesse Quick being a massive prostitute. He was proud of that and took ownership of it in interviews.

Yeah he said that he didn’t like her being on the team because she was “out of place”, and I guess editorial made him keep her as Bart was on YJ and Wally on JL.

I do find it interesting that despite how despised Devin is she's one of the most influential Titans, Roy, and Dick writers. Like you said she pretty much created the notion of Titans being friends is why they keep getting together, but her panels/pages are also the ones that batfamilygays latched onto to create their fanon version of Dick (that has since been used in WFA and leaked into canon via Taylor's run).

Every Taylor book is the same. The character interactions are completely frictionless and bland, with cloying ‘wholesome’ moments peppered in for Twitter people to fawn over. The antagonists are cartoonishly evil and incompetent, allowing the heroes to get a boring, unambiguous victory every time, because even the slightest hint of adversity would be too much for his audience to tolerate. It just slides down their throats like a hunk of slimy, raw meat, without a hint of seasoning or flavor. But as long as he puts the right ships together and has the characters talk about how much they heckin’ love and respect each other, people will keep buying it and he’ll keep getting work.

Is it in character for Dick to have contingency plans for his friends?

      Anonymous

Tim, yes after they changed his character in the mid 00s.. I think he actually it did in Red Robin (peak Batman lite?) prior to that, no he wouldn’t.
Dick however, wouldn’t no matter what stage of his character development he’s in. He was appalled by Bruce’s actions in Tower of Babel and IIRC that story said Dick and Tim wouldn’t do something like that. Cause it’s one thing to get mad and call your buddy a junkie or tell your gf to get out before you get rid of the elevators, it’s another to carefully plan out how to kill your friends.

You see Nightwing's approach in Titans shortly after Tower of Babel came out. Unlike the Batman and the JLA, Dick has an actual reason to worry. Half the Titans have gone evil and nearly destroyed the world at one point or another. The most recent (at the time) being Cyborg and the Technis Imperative.
