>technologically advanced alien species
>capable of energy shields, disintegrating lasers, and light speed travel
>wiped out by the common cold
Is Spielberg a hack?

Its explained that the alien tehnological development was as alien as the aliens themselves were, i.e they hadn´t even invented the wheel and were confused by it when they saw a bicycle, but they had invented tripods and space travel. Theory also being that because of this, they never invented germ theory either.

Nice headcanon, bro.
Go read the original book
Was this in the books?
Ye
it's been a while since i've seen this film, were the tripods always deep down in the Earth? if so, how did we never know about them (or were they just so deep down)?
its based on a proto boomer book and such has proto boomer dumbfrickery, I like to think the lightning teleported them to the earth
Their sheer hubris was their downfall.
It always triggers me when you see attack helicopters and airplanes flying directly at whatever sci-fi or godzill or kaiju they are shooting at. Like as if they wouldn't have shot their bombs or missiles from 30,000ft and miles away from the threat. No they gotta get right in their face to shoot them.
Missiles, yes. Bombs are dicier with a moving target. Autocannons are relatively short range so you have to get in reasonably close with those depending on target size.
Bombs have a range of 15 miles when dropped from altitude and can be guided to hit moving targets. Even the updated Tomahawk can hit moving targets and it's range is 1500 miles.
An Apaches 30mm cannon has a range of 3/4 of a mile. So it should still be hovering a long ways away from it's target. Hellfires have a range of 5 miles.
>tomahawk
>hellfires
Missiles so moot point.
>An Apaches 30mm cannon has a range of 3/4 of a mile.
That would fit nicely under the relatively short range category. Moreso when it's, say, upper Manhattan and your target is ducking behind buildings.
>upper Mnahattan
*Lower Manhattan.
they must stay below the cloud layer or they get EMP'ed
Man seeing this makes me sad we haven't had good Spielberg kino in ages. Really wish he had done Interstellar.
>the basement scene
that really killed the pace
what was spilledberg thinking?
Spielberg does pretty good sci-fi, as does Cruise.
I think people sleep on Minority Report for no good reason. It's a good flick.
but why is it so blurry and colourless
It was the style at the time.
Not the puke sticks.
Mini tripods 🙂
me on the left
He does. Ready Player One was fine but it was a lesser Spielberg. Cruise and Spielberg teaming up of Interstellar was a missed opportunity.
i like this film but what the point of hitech disposable newspaper when it the can be continually updated?
>not throwing away your ipad after viewing a single website
Poorgay.
this film had ridiculous convenience and plot armour, like the plane crash destroying everything EXCEPT the car the need to travel
>Their sheer hubris was their downfall.
I forgot the fricking bit.
>Iran attacks Israel (2024, colorized)
I kind of like it. We earned our right to live with the bacteria and other shit on this planet. You b***hass aliens wanna come here and kill us you gotta deal with the germs too stankass ETs.
Anon, The War of the Worlds was written in the 1890s when the germ theory of disease was still new and viruses had just been discovered. The aliens-killed-by-pathogens thing was cutting edge sci fi at the time.
>this homie believes in viruses
>this thing is real
>covid is real
>the vaccine is safe and effective
>i am a government dog
>i am happy
You schizopost on Cinemaphile. You are not a revolutionary.
>this anon is real
>he is revolutionary
>he is an ally
>he loves his government
>he is happy
Shame no Thunder Child.
Why was it underwater?
BRAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAP
If the aliens had never encountered pathogens before then they would have no idea that they exist. It's an ironic downfall because our world is too alien for them. Hope that cleared things up for you champ.
How would they know to protect themselves against a human virus.
Even when we went to the moon we didn't expect any foreign bacteria or virus to come back but the astronauts still stayed in quarantine for weeks after. Aliens smart enough to build these tripods and interstellar travel should expect some kind of contamination probability.
Not if their planet has no pathogens at all. Maybe viruses never appeared on Mars and all the single-celled organisms are harmless.
Yeah nature is brutal, there is no way they evolved without any kind of bacteria or any kind of virus. Even then we still have shit ton of multi cell parasites and fungi.
Considering all life comes from single cell organisms, there will always be some kind of bacteria that feeds on other single cell life form. You're basically saying there would be no prey/predator wherever they are from.
All I'm saying is that alien means alien. They can have pretty much any kind of biosphere you'd care to imagine. It's not that hard to imagine a biosphere without disease-causing pathogens. Maybe we're the weirdos because our biosphere is constantly trying to kill us. Maybe ours is a death world.
don't bother, he's autistic.
So they come from a world where nothing decomposes and dead things just pile up for billions of years.
If we have learned anything is that life finds a way. It fills every niche possible. Even the bacteria in your body that is good for you where it's at becomes dangerous if ingested or gets into a cut/wound. Which is why you don't eat your poop.
They are a carbon based life form. They eat to survive, which means they have bacteria within them. They would know about pathogens and bacteria.
>They are a carbon based life form. They eat to survive, which means they have bacteria within them.
See, the thing is this is all your headcanon. It's not supported by the book (or either movie) at all. They're ALIENS. We don't know anything about their chemistry or physiology.
You literally wouldn't have any life without bacteria. You wouldn't have photosynthesis without bacteria. it's the basis of life itself and literally the common ancestor of all life.
>We don't know anything about their chemistry or physiology.
Actually, for earth bacteria to be able to affect them, their biology would have to be extremely similar to ours. Most diseases can't even jump between different species, they would be harmless to something completely different.
>Actually, for earth bacteria to be able to affect them, their biology would have to be extremely similar to ours.
living creatures, all life on earth, has same chemical chirality, the "handedness" is for the same side, alien life of opposite chirality would be unable to get nutrient from earth food and same for humans on their planet
there are so many types of bacteria that basically any multicellular organism is susceptible to bacterial infection of some kind though
Also they were actively terra forming to make Earth suit them better. Makes no sense they would not know about microbes.
if i was there it wouldn’t have went down like that
They didn't take the vaxx.
whatever kills americans is good
>all these posts saying "how could they know about viruses"
Why would an advanced alien species forgo any kind of reconnaissance?
Bigger question is why were alien tripods buried a million years ago on earth?
Yeah it might have been best if they just have came here like the book, rather than sending pilots into their buried ships.
Mars was on its last legs. They were desperate.
>laser brings down bridge
>somehow doesn't damage clothing
Huh?
different settings, duh.
thats like in the top 5 concerns of having contact with any extraterrestrial life, either it visiting us or us visiting it.
Take it up with HG Wells
Spielberg is a hag, a gay and a hack, but I thought the twist was pretty cool. Especially considering the book is like 120 years old by this point. Everyone still unironically thought there's intelligent life building canals on Mars back then.
it was a deadly disease for most of history and isnt “common” to an alien. makes perfect sense
>AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAH
Yes anyone who falls for the germ theory meme is a hack
Personally I like to headcanon that
>the aliens are so advanced that they've eliminated diseases on their planet almost entirely to the extent that it just hasn't been a concern on their radar for a few centuries, so when they show up they just totally forget about the whole disease thing and put all their points into "woah look at us we're hyper-advanced gods" and then get jobbed as a consequence. You could also just simply imagine some kind of alternative biosphere where pathogens are simply less of an issue for whatever reason. The bottom line is you aren't mean to autistically analyse it, take the premise and have fun with it as long as it's somewhat reasonable (which it totally is).
it definitely isnt a completely insane plothole like the internet likes to pretend it is because they're dunning-kreuger biology scholars
I want to rape the e-girls throat.
Heather O rourke agreed
man this movie was kino
>the scary tripod horn
>the harbour scene with the searchlights
>the blood vines
I would have liked to see these frickers tank a small nuclear warhead just to really send home the message that man's weapons don't work here. Doesn't have to be up close, maybe you hear about it on a radio or something.
My main complaint though is that the movie spends WAY too much time dealing with the protagonist's dumbass kids (bad) when we could have more time dealing with the tripods themselves and their shenanigans (good).
>military superpower
>trillion dollar defense budget
>beaten by a dozen caveBlack folk with box-cutters
What would you do in this situation?
Get a load of grenades and shove it up the aliens sphincter.
crawl through the massive gaps in the bars and take my chances falling to the ground honestly
My biggest problem with this movie is that there are no likeable characters in it. Tom Cruise is a frick up that is hated by his close ones, the daughter is either hyper competent or an annoying spoiled brat depending on what the plot needs, the son is a suicidal shithead, the ex wife is a c**t and her boyfriend or husband or whatever is a non character, that nutjob that lets Cruise and the daughter take shelter inside his basement is about to get them killed because he's completely insane... After a while you just want the alien to come and fricking kill them all, but they die like little b***hes.
dude thats nothing, i once saw a movie where:
>strongest most intelligent species
>create cures for diseases, rockets, AI, etc
>defeated by group of small hat weaklings who eat baby penises and all they had to do was say nonsense that was obviously false to every other race like "your men can be women and vice versa" and "import beings who despise you into your borders"
seriously who writes this shit??? as if that hyper intelligent race would fall for that
