Tax-funded military + public consent to go along with wars are...inextricably linked! SJWs never had to take care of their kids born deformed from radiation. Japan's war apologism is due to how US handled their postwar reconstruction, letting them keep the emperor allowed remnants of wartime narrative to linger on. But Gojira is like a twist on the vengeful spirits of people who died of grievance or "wrongful deaths". Very folklore.

I cant articulate it well but maybe because a story about humans coming together to fight something greater than them is a more interesting story than big monsters fighting each other.
As a kid you dont understand the appeal of the former and just enjoy the action.

I think it’s pretty common for kids to enjoy watching a protector defeat the bad guys. Makes them feel more safe and secure. TMNT, Batman, GI Jie, Good Godzilla, etc. It’s comforting to believe that there are larger than life forces that stand for order and will stomp out anything evil or threatening. They look at these good guys with awe and respect and almost love.

Adults don’t need that as much. You can appreciate Godzilla for different reasons now. Including appreciating the fricking carnage they’re capable of.

I think this is why modern superhero movies that have a ton of destruction suck so often. The directors grew up and want to explore complex and violent adult themes but they forget that these cultural heroes need to be viewed through a child’s point of view sometimes and you have to pick which feel you’re going for. You can do a Godzilla minus one or you can do a Tami spider man but you can’t mix the tones like a Batman vs Superman or it’s just a mess.

        good post

      Anonymous

I think it may be because with Godzilla being the good guy, the human characters are subservient to his role in the story as the savior of humanity (even if they play a supporting role to him). So, when the humans are on screen it comes across like the story is actually taking a back seat to talk about these people who ultimately don't matter to the story because they're all there in service to Godzilla against the monsters. Don't get me wrong. I love a lot of "Godzilla as protector and killing monsters" stories, but there's usually a feeling from the crowd that they wanted to see less of the humans because they didn't matter to the main conflict of the movie.

With him being the villain, the humans are the protagonists and play a central role in stopping him, so their actions feel more meaningful, especially being so over-powered.

Or maybe I could be completely wrong

        (cot'd from the first post)

Honestly, maybe one of the better versions of "Godzilla as a protector" could be from the Godzilla: The Series as Godzilla was directly tied to one of the main cast members: https://youtu.be/1b2CtgkwJQA?si=G1xI6dZ_la1Q5M7x

This. In Godzilla vs human conflicts the human element isn't so bad. When it's godzilla vs other kaiju the human element is nearly useless. Except for the one mecha godzilla one I forget the name of when they use the mecha to help him out. Very few of them have managed to make a Godzilla vs kaiju+human story and make it interesting. It's hard to juggle all 3 especially when one of those 3 is mainly just supposed to be collateral damage.

hollywood fricking hates it when foreign movies that they have no control over encroaches on their market, which in turn makes the bots and social media npcs hate it. especially in a year where Disney has put out nothing but bombs, and the other studios haven't performed spectacularly.

just look at how hollywood treats the spider-verse, as if they're some messiah that blessed animation. but they only performed okay at the box office, and japanese animation has been at its most popular peak for over a decade, with mugen train outperforming hollywood movies for all of 2020. but nobody look at that, everybody look at hollywood animation!

How can we start a shill campaign to get Godzilla nominated for awards? Golden Globes and Oscar technical categories should be easy, but the goal should be Oscar best picture vs. Oppenheimer.

I thought it would be awkward to hear the Mothra motif in the movie but it fit that scene perfectly. Also was a pants-shitting moment.

            Anonymous

Yeah it was strange to hear instrumental Mahara Mosura but I was glad to hear an Ifukube theme in a theatre and at that moment came in at the perfect moment in the scene.

              Anonymous

Nah it wasnt Mahara Mosura or the Yuki Koseki one, its the one that complements the Godzilla cue from vs Mothra 64

                Anonymous

I thought Ifukube only took Mothra's Song. And that was like the one Koseki composition that fit Ifukube's style. Others are good like Charge of Mothra but it's just too different.

The mothra song (this one) was Yuji Koseki

                ?feature=shared

A rendition of this is in Mothra vs Godzilla (1964) but only the vocals, no music due to being a different composer, the other mothra theme cues that debuted in the film were all Ifukube.

In Minus One they used this track. The final section is Mothra's theme.

Wasn't it the vs. Mothra theme?

I think for the 1st time in the main movies, these are actually new versions/arrangements instead of what the Anno movies did and plastered the old mono themes.

About as poorly as other giants of classic cinema.

It holds up great. But I'm also not a zoomer so I don't care about special effects not being super realistic or the movie being fairly slow by modern standards. It aims to tell a tragic tale about war and a giant lizard monster. And that's exactly what Ishiro Honda did.

      Anonymous

The original is a good movie. Obviously, the special effects look dated compared to today, but good storytelling doesn't age. The main conflict of the story being unleashing horrors beyond our imagination based on new discoveries or technology is pretty ever-green, and the despair felt in the movie is palpable.

A lot of people today hate the costumes and practical effects of the earlier Godzilla movies. However, if you can suspend your disbelief it's still one of the best Godzilla movies and is an absolute classic. Even if you think miniatures and costumes sounds stupid you should watch it because it's a huge piece of pop-culture and film history.

      >how poorly did it age?
Since it's decades before CGI and a few decades after talkies and practical effects hit the scene it's in that nice goldilocks era where there's almost nothing except the actual quality of the film's content holding it back. Almost every film that people say is worth watching from the 1950s to I'd say the early/mid 1980s is worth watching.

Haven't been keeping up with the drama, didn't even know there was a drama.
But I watched the 2014 Godzilla movie and Shin Godzilla after that, and I think I enjoyed Shin Godzilla more just because it was way more visually coherent compared to the 2014 movie.
Hollywood seems to really love harsh/dramatic climates and low visibility. The shot of Godzilla's giant foot passing the screen for the first time was awesome but that's the extent of what I remember. The rest of the movie is just night time and rain and explosions.
Shin Godzilla has a much different vibe because the weather is fairly ordinary. It felt as if the movie took place on a normal wednesday whereas the 2014 one was filmed during the end of the world.

The movie is about a sensitive pacifist who abandoned his duties durring the war and goes on to take in a woman he doesn't frick for 3 years and supports her and a kid who isn't his.

      Anonymous

I didn't really get the sense that he was a pacifist and more a coward. Maybe he also understood that the war was hopelessly lost and ending up a smear on the side of a ship was a bad death.
It's not her kid either. The MC is also an orphan now and pities the baby. All of Japan is fricked, so even the bitter neighbor who lost her kids and calls him a coward helps them out because the whole point of the movie is coming together after disaster.
One of the most hopeful and earnest films I've seen in years.

It was called kyodatsu, war weariness combined with the despair of defeat. A psychological walking catatonia. Malnutrition, which didn't end until the 1950s, also contributed to it, they all had a degree of beri-beri, even boiled rice was a luxury as shown in the film.
