The Gestapo guy already suspected him, he just wasn't 100% certain. The whole scene after he joins the game is trying to get Fassbender to slip up, Fassbender and Vom Hammersmark know it, and that's the entire tension of the scene. Passengers just happens to screw up before he can dispel enough suspicion.
