I use Christmas time as an excuse to buy tools and stuff that needs replacing during holiday sales. It has it's use for most people. Plus, it is nice to give someone something you know they need/want but never bother to spend on themselves because they are broke with paying bills and raising kids.
How thoughtful a gift is will always trump how much you spent on it. If you don't like the commercialization of gift giving you don't have to go full no-gift. Making gifts is also an option.
