I used to think like this but recently I've come around to it. It feels nice to see someone happy about something you thought of/surprised them with. I only buy stuff for my parents and my girlfriend though, and I just get them one gift each.

How thoughtful a gift is will always trump how much you spent on it. If you don't like the commercialization of gift giving you don't have to go full no-gift. Making gifts is also an option.

        >How thoughtful a gift is will always trump how much you spent on it.
Bingo. I got someone who just moved into a new house a cordless drill for christmas. It's not a traditional gift but he fricking needed one and didn't realize it till he had it.
One thing I will say though, the art of giftgiving isn't universal. Some people are really bad at it, for one reason or another, but they still wanna participate. Most women I know have been pretty lousy at it, going as far as saying "Ok don't buy that, say you want it so I can get it for you."
No b***h, I"m not waiting 4 months to buy a chair.

Christmas was orinally a 12 day festival going from Dec 25th to Jan 6nd. That's why schools give everyone 2 weeks off. When did we decide it only meant 1 day off?

I've wondered that myself. Here's what Wikipedia says, for all that's worth.
        https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Twelve_Days_of_Christmas#United_States

I've studied quite a bit of church history, and it appears to me that traditional holidays and feasts tend to disappear or severely shorten as societies decrease in religious observance and increase in commercialization and industrialization.

Remember that the entire concept of a "weekend" originates from the biblical sabbath. If people don't believe in a God who will provide even when they take a break from work, they'll keep turning the wheels.

Please tell us how state owned and private companies don't act in the exact same way as the public ones, even in the most socialist states where almost everything end up public services the people in charge make up costs and try to bring out the most profit whenever they can.

and it does not matter if you answer to shareholders, tax payers or is even the manager in a employee-owned business someone will demand profit because losses mean that someone will have to cover the losses somehow

If I can exchange greenbacks for a bitcoin, then use that bitcoin to but something, it's money.

errr...no, fiat currency is backed by the law, if you don't use it you starve and go to jail

Crypto is a scam, and always will be. You have to be a moron to invest in a currency with no military, government nor economic backing. All three required most of the time.

          Anonymous

No military or government behind it, sure, but it's economic backing is every nation that accepts it.
If no nation accepts it, it's a black market currency.
If I can buy stuff with it, is it not money? A bartering token exchanged for goods and services with whatever value the parties involved decide it's worth.

it will still not work as a currency, people think crypto can replace gold while missing how gold is actually useful, it last forever, it can take any shape so it can be used to write messages and art, and most of all it trigger our ape brains that likes shinny pretty rock

Crypto hasn't been a currency since 2018. It's basically a stock market at this point.

It's a stock market without dividends or voting rights, that are the only reason why stocks have any value

          >Makes an easy 40-50%
          >Sells
          >Don't care about what it does after that.
This is the correct way to play the crypto market. Whatever the price they're promising is always a scam but if something gets hot you very easily can make money off it short term.

    Social security.
    >even after boomers collectively tore up the budgets of everything just to pad it out more, it all mostly means absolutely frick all from how moronic everything is ran today
    >politicians are genuinely debating on raising the age to be able to collect on it, despite a whole lifetime of paying into it
    >for anyone young you pay into it against your will and will almost certainly never see any of the rewards, or if you do it’d be enough to get you a couple cans of beans or some other paltry shit
    >despite every single person earning a paycheck/W2/whatever automatically paying into it, there is a genuine risk that in the near future the funds for it will run completely out
    >the youth is basically being a sacrificial lamb to prop up millions of moronic old fricks who use it as a crutch from a lifetime of bad decisions instead of being the helping hand it was originally meant to be
You’re literally getting robbed every single paycheck for something you likely won’t ever even be able to use for a multitude of reasons. And even if it doesn’t ever go away, by the time you’re all old and fricked up and able to collect they will constantly bullshit you with either payments that do nothing at best or keep messing around with when they dish it out to you. I’m not against the idea, but it needs a complete overhaul to bring it up to 21st century standards instead of treating it like the world hasn’t changed in the last 90 years. They want young people to keep popping out babies to be able to work and keep the whole shack afloat, but they keep making that very thing more and more difficult for young people to even do. Its like trying to put out a fire by dousing it in kerosene because its a liquid and water is also a liquid.

we really should just cut-out social security and funnel all the money that would have gone into that towards free healthcare. way more cost-effective, and boomers still get a decent retirement since all of their medical bills will be taken care of. It's a win-win.

    Housing.
    >Finite land on planet earth
    >Fence off a piece for you to live in
    >Buy more of the finite land and build more houses
    >Sell these houses at exorbitant prices >some people will buy those houses because people need homes to live
There's a reason why the financial crash of 2008 happened and why most people in their 30's would rather live with their parents.

Depends on where, places like the usa have plenty of space to make affordable bachelor housing. It shouldn't be so expensive either but there's a lot of red tape and speculative investment bullshit or treating real estate as a way to store value to stop inflation from devaluing your savings and shit that drives prices up and actively encourages people to not build enough to meet demand.

      >finite land
While you're technically correct, the fact is you can comfortably house literally every human on earth right now inside the state of Texas alone. It might seem like overpopulation is a looming issue if all you look at are the heaps of people living on top of each other in major cities, but the Earth itself has PLENTY of room to spare. We're not even close to using up even a percentage of all the land there is

The bigger issues are the higher-ups demanding white-collar employees to work in-person for some bullshit reason, zoning laws, local governments being just as (if not more) corrupt than the federal government, and the vacuum of blue-collar laborers.

Streaming services in general are a fricking joke.
They're not even convenient in the slightest. I'd rather stick with cable TV, piracy and the exception of physical media in case I really, REALLY love a movie or a show to the point of wanting to own it.
Plus, all these piece of shit services do is pump hot trash with zero production quality whatsoever, diminishing people's media standards.
It's literally only a thing because of how moronic boomers & younger zoomers are when it comes to torrenting shit.

The Tor browser plus public wifi/VPN. Its what Dread Pirate Roberts used and kept him safe from glowies. To truly convict him they needed to seize his PC and if you're the paranoid type having a live USB OS would make that incredibly hard.
Of course the browsing experience with that is pure garbage compared to regular browsing, but its as anonymous as can be.

    >Home Owners associations
Moving into a new area and being told that if you want to live there, you MUST pay 200-600 dollars a month on top of your mortgage. All for the honor of privilege of some shrill c**t married to the HOA President being an annoying b***h and telling you what you can and can't do with your own home, many of them overcharging on HOA fees so they can skirt a little off the top for themselves and then feed you bullshit about how it's for "Trash pick up" and "Maintaining our roads during snow storms" even though your whole neighborhood is dumping $100,000+ a year into that shit
    >Filing your own taxes.
The government knows exactly how much money you owe or should get back. It's intentionally obfuscated from you, the citizen, because the bankers and accounting firms have more power than politicians and keep blocking the government's efforts to just give you that information. It's cryptic and labyrinthian on purpose so the majority of people will either be too dumb, too busy, or too lazy to do it themselves, so they'll hire an accountant.
    >Planned obsolescence for cell phones
Your phone has regular updates because phone companies don't want your phone lasting longer than three or four years, and ideally you'll pay for a new one every two.
    >Xbox Live/Playstation Plus/Nintendo Switch Online
Telling you that you need to pay a monthly fee to use their online "service" on their console even though you already pay for your own internet, and these "Services" can thrive entirely on video game sales revenue the way Steam and Gog do on PC.

The cost of Nintendo Switch Online is a lot less than having every franchise annualised and the servers for last years games turning into ghost towns essentially creating a pseudo-subscription like with sports games or CoD. Peer to peer netplay really should have been the model for console online multiplayer so no one has to maintain or pay for a server.
