Wonka was an origin story of a musical movie from the 70's, which was not a hit but became a classic
Dune was a hit adaptation from a notoriously "unfilmable" book.

An A-List actor isn’t a measure of talent or success, or even necessarily fame; it’s the ability to earn revenue for a project (and that includes endorsement). They’re all pretty much locked in to the zoomer zeitgeist (youth is always the most sought after demographic) and their name on the poster or shilling a brand is gonna being in money and attention. Frick even the Stones were desperate enough to purchase Sweeney for a bit of youth validation, as she’s not an actress just a pair of breasts. They’re all debated on this board more than others. Hot topics.

      Anonymous

      >it’s the ability to earn revenue for a project
None of them have that ability. They've starred in successful shows but that's not because of them. Really the only Hollywood actor these days with any drawing power is Tom Cruise. Other than that Tarantino, Nolan and Cameron also draw but they are directors.

        Anonymous

Cruise is old, marketing c-list unless you want to sell viagra and adult diapers. Even Clooney has more marketability. And he’s a movie and tv nostalgia act. None of his fresh IPs have been successful .. Mummy was a massive bomb … he’s been churning out the same MI shit for decades and even needed zoomer weight to get through Maverick reboot. Cruise has to be careful because he’s actually moving into the “sad” category, because he’s so earnest and trying so hard (and looking so hard) to remain “young” and “relevant” when it’s clear he not anymore. He seriously needs to transition to age appropriate roles. And not The Expendables.

          Anonymous

Cruse is literally the only actor whose movies has made any sort of profit in the past 10 years on his name alone. Even the Mummy didn't bomb, it made back its budget. I do wish to see him in more serious roles instead of action roles, but you can't deny the results. He's literally the last Hollywood star

          >And not The Expendables.
Shouldn't have to worry about that series anymore. The 4th one flopped so catastrophically bad I doubt the producers would have the (old saggy) balls to attempt it again.

Cruise, DiCaprio and Brad Pitt are literally the last movie stars

            Anonymous

DiCaprio is a meme, not an actor. The Academy finally relented and gave him an Oscar for wresting with a bear. He tried to act ugly in Killer of Flower Moon and everyone realized he wasn’t that good of an actor (though he was, when he was younger). Brad is starting to lose his looks, is still screen charismatic, but honestly I don’t think he cares anymore. He seems bit broken. Maybe he can use that in craft and get a late career winner.

In any case, none of them are relevant anymore. No one watches them and goes “oh wow” like Butler in Dune (or Elvis), or even Pugh or Zendaya. Cruise, Dicaprio and Pitt may be “a-list,” but they’re Tom Hanks a-list: predicable, comfortable, boring, and not as marketable and sure-fire as they used to be.

What is with the absolutely unhinged DiCaprio hate on this board? He's been in a ton of great movies and literally no one else in Hollywood could've pulled off Calvin Candie.

You really want to argue Goggins couldnt have pulled it off, and in fact would have been better?
Lots of actors could have. Decaprio wasn’t even the best actor in the movie.

                Anonymous

Goggins is a great supporting character actor, but he's not a lead villain in a studio feature film. That movie especially needed a big performance from the heavy because Foxx was such a dead fish as Django. Now consider that DiCaprio can also nail roles like Frank Abagnale or The Wolf of Wall St., imagine Goggins trying to do those lmao.

It’s not about just opening movies anymore. It’s the whole star brand. Zendaya brought tens of millions in earned media for dune during the promotion and her fashion blitz. Cruise can’t produce or deliver that, even if he breaks an ankle or berates crew in set. We live in a Taylor Swift world, where followers and social and buzz matters; not the old “star’s name in bold above title” measurement.

I guess the difference is that a lot of people on the list are there because of social media popularity and not really because they have outstanding acting abilities or have done anything worth mentioning in terms of movie appearances.
Zendaya is easily explained because she also has a successful modelling career, but Glen Powell may have starred in Maverick, but he certainly had just a few lines and was more of a side character. He certainly didn't carry the movie. The comedy movie was extremely forgettable and he's only now going to star in some actual leading man projects, but none of which seem to be worth mentioning other than Twisters. Most of these people just seem to act pretty at events or on social media and don't do anything outstanding.

        Anonymous

The real difference is that the acting profession has "matured", in that the last older batch of actors were the first who went on to become directors and producers instead of just stalling out at "actor" like previous generations. And just as importantly, acting became a "prestigious" profession that a rich person would no longer be ashamed to have their kids take up like it used to be (actors used to be a very "new money" group that were seen as low class by the real upper class). This meant that they created a nepotism and patronage network where only their own children are allowed to become the "next big sensation" rather than the more free for all previous eras. You can't be "discovered" by a producer anymore, you have to be the producers son.

    >If there is a succinct, one-word answer to the gnawing questions that keep studio execs up at night — “Who can open a movie?” “Who will audiences leave their homes to see?” — it would be “Zendaya,” the award-winning actress whose outfits alone generate multiday news cycles. The closest comp for her current status, note execs, is ’90s-era Julia Roberts, who was pulling down awards nominations for Steel Magnolias while releasing crowd-pleasers like Pretty Woman. Notably, Zendaya, 27, has achieved this status with few film credits. After she did time in the kids TV trenches, Spider-Man: Homecoming launched her at the box office, followed by surprise musical hit The Greatest Showman. Euphoria, a show built around her (and co-starring fellow New A-Listers Sweeney and Elordi), set her up for her current rise, though her ascendant-movie-star demand puts that show’s return in question. While three Spider-Man films kept her in theaters in regular intervals (the fourth remains stalled), Zendaya landed Dune (or, more accurately, Dune landed Zendaya). She has yet to announce any other studio films and doesn’t need paycheck projects: She has lucrative endorsement deals with Bulgari and Lancôme and earned more by starring in and producing Luca Guadagnino’s Challengers, a reported $10 million, than she would have with a Marvel movie.

nothing against zendaya the actor but i do question the veracity of this statement. although she does have 184 million instagram followers so maybe its just a blind spot for me
