Eh, I read the books and it does give more a TRON/SAO vibe than a IHNM vibe. First because AM directly forced people to be his toys while here it was seemingly *somewhat* consentive. "I put some headset" instead of "something/one put a headset on me", and second because AM had control over his subjects' minds while Caine explicitely says he doesnt.
Besides, if you change AM to not be spiteful you've basically changed almost the whole premise of the story and it'd be hard to recognise, like here.

i do hope the characters do evolve over time, a lot of these types of mystery shows end up explaining why characters act the way they do, but never go through an arc and change from when they appear.

So what are the odds that Digital Circus is set in a post-apocalyptic world? It's a bit cliche at this point for "DEEPEST LORE" series but at the same time it's fitting for something based on IHNMaIMS.
My personal theory is that The Void is a representation of what the space the series takes place in was originally meant to be used as, a vast store of human knowledge and digital back ups of willing test subjects. A sort of seed vault for human knowledge and culture for the worst case scenario. Caine was an AI designed as a warden of sorts, to insure the integrity of the data held within the server, but at some point he gained sentience and a desire to create. So he warped some existing parts of memory into the Digital Circus, and has been transferring backed up people from The Void to populate his "game". It's even possible that the "people" he's been choosing have had the integrity of their data compromised at some point, and instead of deleting these corrupted files he's been sending them to the Digital Circus as a sort of safe haven/retirement community before their corrupted data consumes them completely (which the backups perceive as having become "abstracted").
The Digital Circus takes place in the same universe as Murder Drones, figure it out dipshits

Instead of just letting that information come through naturally over the course of something interesting happening

how so? I mean they explain a few basic things at the start (this is a digital world, there's no escape, the teeth guy is in charge) but:
> A) Pomni is a newcomer who is understandably confused about being transported into a bizarre I-Spy dimension, so it makes sense in-story for her to ask questions about the world she's found herself in, and for the people around her (who have been through this before and presumably want to just get on with things) to answer them
> B) the exposition only really lasts for a few minutes before they dive into the plot of the episode

So how exactly does sleeping work? In the real world the body does some hormonal shit to make you feel tired/fall asleep, but in TADC you don't actually need to sleep (and you don't have an actual physical body) so that can't happen. Do you just automatically fall asleep if you lay down with your eyes closed for long enough? Can you fall asleep anywhere or do you need to be in your specific room/bed? Maybe the only way to sleep is to ask Caine, so every time you want to go to bed you have to search around for him and ask him to put you to bed - it would be keeping in with the overall "kiddy" feeling of the place.
