Not that anon, but not every fan base goes here ends up making OCs like this. Or at least not the ones I've checked out. And even if they do it feels like very few end up making them to this extent. I'm someone who's really been enjoying these OCs. A lot of creative ideas and cool characters have come from it. I just find it interesting that OCs were made in such a short time. I imagine that's because of the nature of the show. What with how it seems like new cast members can drop in without notice and how abstracting can write off characters pretty easily as well along with a hallway full of previous lost characters making it pretty easy to make up anything and justify it easily. That and since we only have one episode to work with and we want to post about the series, OCs can fill that void well. It's all in good fun so I don't really see the issue anyway.

I usually do like OCs, as long as they can fit into the canonical story neatly. There is no place in Digital Circus for OCs because all the past folk are lore relevant and Pomni is probably the last person that will join the circus helping everyone escape. So yeah DC OC fags can fag off.

Well, I'm a big fan of Drrk, and although I'm a bit biased since he was made to be a friend for Ronko, I like the concept of a character who could act as a rival to Caine in terms of personality. Who knows, maybe there could a be a storyline where he legitimately tries to usurp him.
Private Pax, the itch-a-skitch, and pencil lady are also standouts to me personally.

The etch-a-sketch kinda works but the rest of it doesn't fit with the show's style or with the original style the show is attempting to emulate.

Still, I think it's more about the novelty of having a leg in the proverbial race and having fun than staying absolutely true to Goose's style. This stuff's never going to be official or anything, and I'd argue there's some peace to be found in that.

yeah that's pretty clear imo, they all look like filler characters. Kaufmo already demonstrated how abstraction works, don't think there's any reason to go back and show more former characters. at most they'll be silent in the background of some flashback scene.
It's possible to show up in the flashback of characters who have been there for a while. I don't think they should do that though. I don't like the use of flashbacks. I think they're a little lazy. I think the story could very easily be told in the present without needing to do a flashback. At the very least they should be able to make the exposition diegetic
the only abstracted character who really has a reason to show up in a flashback is likely Queenie due to her resemblance to Kinger (and how much fanart she's showing up in)
As I understand it, one of the mannequins (the one taking a bath) is a player as well. My theory is that he (or she) attempted to skip the avatar selection as a cheeky way to sneak in the game with the hopes his memories would remain intact, but because they never chose an avatar they defaulted to the mannequins who have no mouth
depends on if the avatars are actually influenced by the player (if it can actually read brain data in any form) or if it's just from a randomized pool of what's available

Yeah. I also thought the plotline “Pomni thinks she’s found an exit door, but in the end Caine reveals he made it himself and it doesn’t actually lead anywhere” seemed kind of ambitious for a first episode and could have been saved for sometime after Pomni’s first day.
I actually think it’s a great pilot/episode. But it works so well as a standalone short that I actually feel at a loss for what they could do from here that wouldn’t get very stale very quick.

Well let's discuss that then, I'm curious what else you'd call it if you actually read into it past those surface level tropes. We don't have a lot of information to go off of yet but what we have doesn't bode well. If you consider the concept that people whose minds snap after being stuck in there a while turn into weird eye monsters and have to be dumped into a pit of monster soup, what does that say about the state of their brains? I'm still leaning toward the idea that they aren't even the original minds anymore but digital copies, and that alone would lean heavily into existentialism. What do you do if you believe yourself to be a real person but effectively aren't? Stuck in a world you know to be fake but with no way to get back to it.
It's a basic concept yeah but there's still ways to go about it in an interesting and hopefully funny way. That being said, it bears remembering the creator specifically cites I Have No Mouth and I Must Scream as an influence. We already have the basic setup of a group of people all but held hostage by an AI, contorted into forms that aren't their own. We also had a character with a name reminiscent of Kafka obsessed with the fact that there's No Exit, but it remains to be seen if these are anything more than cheeky references, if they even are.
When it first came out, it was a novel horror game which turned the idea of uncanny Chuck E. Cheese animatronics on its head. Cue skyrocketing popularity and many other attempts at "mascot horror" like Bendy, Poppy's Playtime and Garten of Banban.
FNAF popularized "mascot horror" - horror games with recognizable characters and a "thing for kids but it's actually le dark and spooky" theme. Shit like Baldi's Basics, Poppy's Playtime and Garten of BanBan took the idea and ran with it until it was purely bright marketable trash for the Youtube Kids audience. Digital Circus is heavily influenced by that trend.
Mascot horror which peaked around the Minecraft era with FNAF. The good thing about Digital Circus is that it doesn't try to be condescending with its surrealist meta humor, nor is it being a tryhard in the DEEPEST LORE like Hello Neighbor's attempts. For me, it kinda has this weird indie-horror vibe like Potato Farm.

How was any of that pretentious? It's a very simple statement, and if someone very clearly isn't paying attention theres nothing pretentious about pointing it out. People might just not know theres a deeper plot or important details that are coming up they are failing to register - because some people are more used to just watching just to watch rather than put a mystery together. It's not for everyone but it's worthwhile to at least tell people what the show requires to understand, you can't really just breeze through it or you'll just get confused.

This is true of FNAF too though? the "horror" bit is that you're trapped in a dark room surrounded by things that want to kill you, the animatronics themselves are mildly unsettling at best

CA was pretty good but the Kinger levels are a real slog, having to manually control his floating hands to catch Buggy every stage then having to slowly shuffle to the next area made me want to rip my hair out

In all honestly, I really like the vibe and theme of the overall presentation, I really like use of glitching, polygonal weirdness and bug looking movement. I really enjoy the influence of 90's computer graphics and everything that came out of it
The character design is nice and charming
in some way this is something akin to Don't Hug me I'm scared, the underlying horror theme is pretty fascinating, but I'm very early on predicting that the whole façade will be disolved in 5 words or less
but the dialogue is so bad, I hate it, I hate how the personalities of the characters are too snarkly, predictable, stereotypic, and frankly unappealing, the typical brand of adult animated shows, far too american to be tolerable, I unironically understand the humor they're pulling in here, but I'm simply not laughing
if anything the show is gonna glorify mental illness or something, lol
