If it were a proper 5.1 system, why do you need to crank the center and turn down the sub in order to hear clear dialog? Perhaps the sound mixing is the problem.
Because everyone has a different sitting distance from the monitors and the room modes of every single room are different. In my living room, the sub frequencies are amplified near the sitting position, thus it needs to be turned down a bit.
The most important thing is different monitors for different frequency ranges, thus a 3 way system. Poor dialog sounds mostly comes from all audio of the movie coming out of a single speaker. You need higher voltage to play lower frequencies at the same volume as higher frequencies, thus when you play a high and a low frequency at the same nominal volume over a single speaker, the higher frequency is droned out because you just have a single membrane to recreate both sounds at once. If you have 3 way monitors in which the dialog is played over it's own speaker and the lower frequencies are played over their own speaker, the sound is much clearer.
It all comes down to people cheaping out with sound bars, or with their crappy built in TV speakers.
Noone in film business will tweak the sound setting of a movie to suit a shitty built in TV speaker.

But it was and always had been, because that's called physics and had nothing to do with sound mixing. You don't feel like that because back in the day a lot of CRT TVs had 2 way or 3 way speakers in the sides. That changed when they started manufacturing all appliances in China.
Old movies and tv shows had really BASIC sound mixes. (I have an actual home cinema, and most of them really don't sound good at cinema volume at ALL)
And yes, when movies are mixed, you must understand they are mixed for reference volume. This is much louder than people realise, and zero TV speakers are able to actually produce that volume across the frequency range.

Movies aren't supposed to sound "realistic" they're supposed to provide sounds that evoke the correct emotions and draw you into the movie. Real sounds are rarely satisfying, movies should be a heightened reality with a sound vocabulary that helps convey what's going on while being satisfying and pleasing to the ear.

It could be, but most creators put even less thought into proper subtitling than they do into sound mixing or voice direction.
There was one video game that was getting praise for having subtitles that trailed speech as it was given. No dramatic reveals in the dialogue could be spoiled by reading ahead in the subtitle line. No pacing could be thrown off, because the the pacing was matched.
But fricking nobody else ever wants to put in that work for good subtitles when they can just lazy shove the whole script in there and have it feed out a line or two at once.

You're not a real sound engineer unless you own a shitty pair of headphones or speakers specifically so you know what your work sounds like on the equipment 99.99% of people are going to actually be hearing it on.
This is true for music (and generally this is the mastering engineer's domain, not the mix engineer) but films don't generally get this consideration for the pretty simple reason that box office performance is king.

This is true. People start losing the ability to hear certain frequencies as they age, it starts getting bad in the 30's, especially in the higher frequencies. But since it is a very gradual process over years, people do not notice it.
tldr; Get your hearing tested, you may be surprised by how much you cannot hear.

Yes, Nolan genuinely doesn't care about dialog. The information delivered in dialog in Tenet is largely pointless and the plot of the movie is largely irrelevant as well. here's the problem with modern color grading: it's heavy-handed and lacks any sublety. you can do the same color grading like in the movie but tone it down by 75% so that you only hint at it. i love the natural lighting like in the above pic as well but that would get boring very quickly also.

That you're viewing on a digital screen. Colour grading is literally just how the colours are interpreted. It's why every film rescan looks slightly different because the digital scans have to be interpreted (along with the degradation and differences in projection of the film stock itself).
As far as I'm aware Nolan goes further than this though because his films are digitally scanned so that they can be digitally edited, and are then reprinted onto film reels.
And then a BTS photo from the same location. There's heavy color grading in the final film.

It's no secret that Nolan doesn't care for post-processing and tries to capture as much in-camera as he can. It's the same reason why he uses CG as little as possible. That's not color grading, it's just lighting.
It's not just color grading, it's set and costume design, all of his in-color movies (Following is B&W) have the same vomit yellow-teal look. The costume for TDK Joker is readable for red-green color blindness, in Todd Philips Joker the hair and suit are the same color. Funny because Philips Joker is a very color-rich movie despite the run-down setting
He goes the classic way. Instead of doing digital color grading, the colors are altered chemically like back in the day. Pretty sure Tarantino still does the same.
Nolan's mixing is fine.
The problem with his dialogue is that it can be difficult to clearly capture dialogue on noisy film sets and he flat-out refuses to use ADR because he'd rather have unintelligible dialogue and preserve the original performance.

And she hemmed and hawwed about how it's not that simple because audiences expect the proper dynamic range from explosions and music and everything. And I wanted to kick her in the face for being so fricking stupid.

I have perfect hearing. I can understand dialogue fine in older movies and some new movies, but plenty of new movies are horrible. In some recent movie that I've forgotten about now, I couldn't make out one of the lines. There was no music or explosions, they were just very mumbly. So it's the equal opposite problem to the loudness wars in the music industry? Sound mixers over the last thirty years or so have subscribed to "loud = better" and they pretty much just crank every channel up to max volume, so everything just ends up in a big mess of peaked audio and lacks the clarity and pop of properly mastered tracks.
This was a major problem from like the late 90s up into the 20teens. Even still I never use subtitles because subtitles are dog shit and ruin the viewing experience. There really should be 0 tolerance for poor audio engineering these days though. Human voices are almost always the most important audio in any medium that has audio so for dialogue to be too quiet to hear over the other audio is the kind of thing that should be a rookie mistake and should never make its way into big budget media at all.

Maybe a quarter of a typical film's dialogue is ADR. No one likes doing it but if it's a particularly chaotic scene or if they're filming on location and it's noisier than what's ideal, most filmmakers will sacrifice the original performance for dialogue clarity. Nolan just comes out on the other side of that decision.

The guy who directed the Shazam films said that about 80-90% of the dialogue was recorded on set. ADR is only used when necessary.
But for films that shoot on real locations instead of studio sets, even 50% may be ADR. Also depends a lot on the demands of the director, and the budget for sound post.

The timing of subtitles isn't always the same and can disappear very quickly in a scene with lots of back and forth.

If someone were to say what you just posted out loud I could read it in about 1/5 the time they would naturally speak it. That's how reading works. Your brain takes in the whole word or even sentence at a time as opposed to having to wait for someone to sound out words.
The audio engineer for the LotR trilogy said that 98% of the dialogue in the films was ADR. They put a lot of care into the sound and it shows.

I directed an indie movie during covid and I had a connected LA friend that pulled a few strings and got me into a real deal post-production sound studio to work on the mix (they’ve worked on billion dollar movies, only reason I got in was they were starved for work in that limited window). The truth is hollywood movies are mastered for the theater, the at-home mix is an afterthought. Yes I think that’s ass backwards too in the age of streaming but it’s the truth. You legitimately need a well calibrated surround set up to hear what the director heard when they approved it. Same goes for color timing, they are done on monitors of significantly higher quality than even the best consumer television.

If you listen to a movie with headphones on you can understand the dialogue. Once I realized this, I understood the problem. I genuinely believe the audio mixers are mixing everything while wearing noise canceling can headphones and once it sounds good to them they just stop and never test it on any other equipment, but sound mixing works radically different through speakers than it does through headphones. I see a similar problem in Twitch livestreams, where 90% of the audience is listening through headphones so they tell the streamer to change the volume of everything based on that and then it sounds like utter shit if you're listening through speakers. So I think that's what's happening to movies, too.

I wouldn't expect most theaters today to know how to set up their audio systems correctly, or to invest in good speakers. Most theaters don't even run their Dolby Fader at the correct level.
Movie mixing engineers have to be the guys who couldn't hack it as mixing engineers for record labels. The latter group mixes on multiple monitors, checks it in their car, checks it on shitty speakers, $15k cabinets, good head phones, bad headphones, open back and closed back... the former group mixes it just right for one specific room.
But it could also be that studios are saving money by just using a mastering plug-in and not sending it off to a proper mastering studio because those are expensive.
Movies used to get separate sound mixes for theaters and for home video/television. But nowadays everything just uses the theatrical mix. I remember back in the day there were a lot of purists who complained about not getting theatrical audio on the DVD. I suspect that not doing separate home mixes today is just a cost-cutting method.

Hasn't it already been proven that the audio has been mixed poorly? Something along the lines of when the movie is playing the dialogue is supposed to be the focal point of the audio stream, but they are lazy and set it to whatever the loudest sound is, so more often than not the dialogue is getting drowned out by explosions or music since those were technically louder.
I remember hearing once that the real problem is a result of our microphones being too good.
Actors in old movies had to speak loud and clear or else the audio would be unusable.
Eventually, microphones in scenes were good enough that directors could start telling their actors to speak more "naturally", and "authentically", instead of, you know, speaking like they're reading a script into a microphone.
Boy was that ever a fricking mistake. When you're talking to a person "naturally" and "authentically" in person, you can ask them to repeat what they just said if you didn't quite catch it. You can't do that to an actor you're listing to on screen.
As an ESL it feels like in a lot of movies that not only is the dialogue really really low, but also all they actors are just mumbling.
I never have this problem watching TV-shows, cartoons or whatever, but in most modern big budget movies it feels like they are whispering/mumbling all their lines.

If you've heard a song before and hear it at a barely perceptible level like in the supermarket, or with background noise over it, then it might take you a little while to identify the song, but once you do and you know where in the song you are, your brain will fill in the 'gaps' from memory and you'll be able to 'hear' it as if you actually can hear every part of it. A person who has never heard it ever before will never be able to hear it or make it out properly because there is insufficient actual information getting to their ears.

Because everyone has a different sitting distance from the monitors and the room modes of every single room are different. In my living room, the sub frequencies are amplified near the sitting position, thus it needs to be turned down a bit.
The most important thing is different monitors for different frequency ranges, thus a 3 way system. Poor dialog sounds mostly comes from all audio of the movie coming out of a single speaker. You need higher voltage to play lower frequencies at the same volume as higher frequencies, thus when you play a high and a low frequency at the same nominal volume over a single speaker, the higher frequency is droned out because you just have a single membrane to recreate both sounds at once. If you have 3 way monitors in which the dialog is played over it's own speaker and the lower frequencies are played over their own speaker, the sound is much clearer.
It all comes down to people cheaping out with sound bars, or with their crappy built in TV speakers.
Noone in film business will tweak the sound setting of a movie to suit a shitty built in TV speaker.

There was one video game that was getting praise for having subtitles that trailed speech as it was given. No dramatic reveals in the dialogue could be spoiled by reading ahead in the subtitle line. No pacing could be thrown off, because the the pacing was matched.
But fricking nobody else ever wants to put in that work for good subtitles when they can just lazy shove the whole script in there and have it feed out a line or two at once.

This is true for music (and generally this is the mastering engineer's domain, not the mix engineer) but films don't generally get this consideration for the pretty simple reason that box office performance is king.

This is true. People start losing the ability to hear certain frequencies as they age, it starts getting bad in the 30's, especially in the higher frequencies. But since it is a very gradual process over years, people do not notice it.

Interstellar is one of the dumbest movies I've ever watched and most of the dialogue really is narratively worthless babble. I imagine the movie would actually be more enjoyable with the dialogue removed completely.

That you're viewing on a digital screen. Colour grading is literally just how the colours are interpreted. It's why every film rescan looks slightly different because the digital scans have to be interpreted (along with the degradation and differences in projection of the film stock itself).
As far as I'm aware Nolan goes further than this though because his films are digitally scanned so that they can be digitally edited, and are then reprinted onto film reels.

This was a major problem from like the late 90s up into the 20teens. Even still I never use subtitles because subtitles are dog shit and ruin the viewing experience. There really should be 0 tolerance for poor audio engineering these days though. Human voices are almost always the most important audio in any medium that has audio so for dialogue to be too quiet to hear over the other audio is the kind of thing that should be a rookie mistake and should never make its way into big budget media at all.

No one likes doing it but if it's a particularly chaotic scene or if they're filming on location and it's noisier than what's ideal, most filmmakers will sacrifice the original performance for dialogue clarity. Nolan just comes out on the other side of that decision.

The guy who directed the Shazam films said that about 80-90% of the dialogue was recorded on set. ADR is only used when necessary.
But for films that shoot on real locations instead of studio sets, even 50% may be ADR. Also depends a lot on the demands of the director, and the budget for sound post.

The audio engineer for the LotR trilogy said that 98% of the dialogue in the films was ADR. They put a lot of care into the sound and it shows.

I directed an indie movie during covid and I had a connected LA friend that pulled a few strings and got me into a real deal post-production sound studio to work on the mix (they’ve worked on billion dollar movies, only reason I got in was they were starved for work in that limited window). The truth is hollywood movies are mastered for the theater, the at-home mix is an afterthought. Yes I think that’s ass backwards too in the age of streaming but it’s the truth. You legitimately need a well calibrated surround set up to hear what the director heard when they approved it. Same goes for color timing, they are done on monitors of significantly higher quality than even the best consumer television.

If you listen to a movie with headphones on you can understand the dialogue. Once I realized this, I understood the problem. I genuinely believe the audio mixers are mixing everything while wearing noise canceling can headphones and once it sounds good to them they just stop and never test it on any other equipment, but sound mixing works radically different through speakers than it does through headphones. I see a similar problem in Twitch livestreams, where 90% of the audience is listening through headphones so they tell the streamer to change the volume of everything based on that and then it sounds like utter shit if you're listening through speakers. So I think that's what's happening to movies, too.
Films and shows are mixed in rooms that are basically small surround sound theaters. There's typically multiple people sitting in on the mixing sessions. They're not doing it on headphones.

Not all theaters are made equal.
I wouldn't expect most theaters today to know how to set up their audio systems correctly, or to invest in good speakers. Most theaters don't even run their Dolby Fader at the correct level.
Movie mixing engineers have to be the guys who couldn't hack it as mixing engineers for record labels. The latter group mixes on multiple monitors, checks it in their car, checks it on shitty speakers, $15k cabinets, good head phones, bad headphones, open back and closed back... the former group mixes it just right for one specific room.
But it could also be that studios are saving money by just using a mastering plug-in and not sending it off to a proper mastering studio because those are expensive.
Movies used to get separate sound mixes for theaters and for home video/television. But nowadays everything just uses the theatrical mix. I remember back in the day there were a lot of purists who complained about not getting theatrical audio on the DVD. I suspect that not doing separate home mixes today is just a cost-cutting method.

Hasn't it already been proven that the audio has been mixed poorly? Something along the lines of when the movie is playing the dialogue is supposed to be the focal point of the audio stream, but they are lazy and set it to whatever the loudest sound is, so more often than not the dialogue is getting drowned out by explosions or music since those were technically louder.
I remember hearing once that the real problem is a result of our microphones being too good.
Actors in old movies had to speak loud and clear or else the audio would be unusable.
Eventually, microphones in scenes were good enough that directors could start telling their actors to speak more "naturally", and "authentically", instead of, you know, speaking like they're reading a script into a microphone.
Boy was that ever a fricking mistake. When you're talking to a person "naturally" and "authentically" in person, you can ask them to repeat what they just said if you didn't quite catch it. You can't do that to an actor you're listing to on screen.
The issue was less with the microphones, and more with the storage media that the microphones recorded the sound on.
As an ESL it feels like in a lot of movies that not only is the dialogue really really low, but also all they actors are just mumbling.
I never have this problem watching TV-shows, cartoons or whatever, but in most modern big budget movies it feels like they are whispering/mumbling all their lines.

If you've heard a song before and hear it at a barely perceptible level like in the supermarket, or with background noise over it, then it might take you a little while to identify the song, but once you do and you know where in the song you are, your brain will fill in the 'gaps' from memory and you'll be able to 'hear' it as if you actually can hear every part of it. A person who has never heard it ever before will never be able to hear it or make it out properly because there is insufficient actual information getting to their ears.
