The authority was one of the earliest comics I read on the mid 00's alongside Planetary.
Looking the style those comics had really left a mark on me.

A late example of "Not your grandpappy's super heros, these superheros have SEX! and MURDER their villains!" but with the edges sanded off and a nice coat of paint to make it digestible.
It's not violent nonsense like 90's image, it's violence with sense.

        >It's not violent nonsense like 90's image, it's violence with sense.
Midnighter is absolutly pure 90's edge.
Maybe with a bit more silly self-awerness but still.

I will legitimately never understand what Jack and Jenny's powers are supposed to be. Jack's power is cities and Jenny is a century? What the frick does either of that even mean? I like the other ones though.

Jenny Sparks has poorly defined electrical powers, and Jenny Quantum has poorly defined quantum powers. Jack Hawksmoor is a genetically altered human by future humans to be fully optimalized for operation within an oppressively urban environment, to the point he can even wear a city like a mech suit. He was treated a lot like Spider-Man in his early StormWatch appearances, and more like Aquaman in the Authority, if that helps.

Jenny is a century baby. She lives for 100 years (aka turn of the century) and in that time has a power set that can manipulate the abilities related to any and all discoveries within in it. IE 1800s Jenny is a woman with control over the electro spectrum and can do all sorts of standard electro things.

1900s and 00s gains access to quantum physics manipulation, nuclear physics, tech, etc on top of the previous powers the other women had. This is summed up as do-anything-I-want by most writers which is why they just wrote her as a b***hy sober Doctor.

If this is too much for your pea brain, just think of her as the Avatar of science.

I thought Quantium was 20s and Sparks 19s. May be reverse but 19 uses nuclear physics as reality bend reason.

20s is built on that + the whole quantum machines will rewrite everything we know on computing and the unknown of the next 80+ years.

Jack is do pretty much anything in/with a city.
When he’s away from one like in a desert he’s pretty useless, but when he’s in one he can travel through it with ease (like go through buildings/the ground or walk on buildings), he can “listen” to a city and find what he needs in one, he can merge with a city to make the city into a giant mech/kaiju he can control, doesn’t need to eat or breathe because he can turn pollution into nutrients and the city breathes for him, can move buildings/city structures, etc.

    >Who is your favorite character?
    Forever Jenny Sparks.
    >What's your favorite run?
    Ellis
    >Favorite page or panel?
When they sink nu-Italy in the other dimension
    >Who do you think the most underrated member of the team is?
Idk if there really is one. Swift, I guess? She always felt out of place because of her somewhat middling powerset but she at least brings a flavor to things
    >What do you think caused the team to become as obscure/unpopular as they are, considering how popular they were back in the early 00s?
I mean, what else would it be? Modern comics caught up to them, took away the wrong lessons, etc. They were a fun experiment in post-superheroism but now every superhero occupies the same type of narrative they did and operates under the same rules. Their edge got lost in the crowd, and their attempts to get edgier only made them seem even more kitsch
    >Thoughts, comments, concerns about their role in the Superman movie?
Dread. I don't need the Authority operating as stand-ins for the Elite, just get the Elite in there to operate as your strawmen and leave the actual characters alone. But maybe Gunn will go for something less typical, considering they're supposed to get their own movie down the road. Can't really do that if you spend their first appearance kicking them down
    >What plot should their own movie will have?
Set at the turn of the twenty-first century, it's the only point in time where their hook works thematically anyway.

A continuation of Stormwatch in which the writers embraced the image style and came up with their own OCs of existing properties. The art is great and the plotting is as if you're reading a blockbuster movie (rip off), from marvel ultimate is a famous version of this series.

Because it's still the same kind of fantasy escape fantasy bullshit as the comics it thinks are immature just with an added layer of violence, sex and cynicism that anyone who's actually mature would have grown out of thinking was cool years ago.

The thing about this series is that most of the plots are carried over from the image era with even characters from that time appearing the difference is that you have high profile writers and some great artists. It's almost like Supreme when Moore took the title is a different animal than the other stories from that time
