Don't the B1 droids downgrade in the films themselves? My memory is they come across, relatively, more competent in TPM than the following prequels.

I get this feeling too, droids are portrayed with independent thought and motivations. I think there was a line when Obi-Wan or Qui Gon comments how scary it would be if they thought for themselves.
It's kind of tragic really and should be explored more often, just like the scary concept of industrial cloning to fight wars (did TCW ever address this?)
