Because "he's evil just because he is" is boring and uncomplicated. Which shouldn't be that surprising for a series of children's books.

            >Do some reading on Tolkien or find a analysis of his work
I understand Tolkien. He created an influential genre of fiction with his children's stories, but they're rife with religious and Luddite allegory because of his Bible thumping ways. If you enjoy it that's fine, but conflict between absolute/innate good and absolute evil doesn't seem challenging or interesting in any way to me.

Tolkien's works are refreshing in a modern media landscape of (often poorly written) grey morality. They have merit by offering variety alone, never mind how intricate and well written his works are (to the point where fans agree to affectionately label him as an autist). I grew up with the movies as a kid but as an adult I appreciate the canon as a whole without being religious myself.

His works are missing the obnoxious element of religion, namely the authoritative "thou must do this or suffer" tone that is baked into actual religious texts. Sure, he has moral stances and views of the world but his focus is still very much just telling a story, one coloured by his religiousness sure, by a story nonetheless. It never felt like a sermon to me.

How is it black and white though? Denethor, Gollum and Saruman were written as characters still capable of redemption l, even Sauron was before he made the ring and fully corrupted himself with Morgoth’s nihilism.

"Mount Doom" is just a nickname adopted for Orodruin after Sauron turned it into his ringmaking workshop. It's not the actual name of anything. That's like saying the dwarves named their kingdom the "Desolation of Smaug".

Orodruin translates to "Mountain of Fate". Doom is the second name derived from that, in the old sense of Doom as Fate.
