They're specifically outsourcing animation to Sony's Canada animation studios so they can pay less for the same quality of animation. The artists there worked on Spiderverse and Mutant Mayhem, so the movie isn't gonna look cheap, but they're done by people who don't work for US dollars.
Also, there's an impending strike happening later this year, and if you outsource all your animation, you can ignore the strike and keep production going for animation like nothing happened.

She was already in the first one, but to answer your question I think Awkwafina is that in a weird overlap of cheap enough to be affordable, prominent in enough projects (including music) to be considered bankable, minority enough to be a quick pick for diversity, generic enough of a voice/accent to be able to slot into many roles (very AAVE despite being Asian) that she could've been replaced with some runner ups while also raspy and distinct enough of a voice to be recognizable thus looping back to the bankable part. She was in some bad movies but never considered box office poison. She is a safe edgy that is never controversial behind the scenes.

Who knows, Dreamworks hasn't pushed gays in their movies very much, but they don't seem to be too against them either. The guy villain in Trolls 3 was voiced by a gay actor and acted like a gay man but had no love interest, and I remember that fat guy from HTTYD movies was also implied to be gay.
But if execs come to push things, Spider Awkafina can conveniently be the one member who just becomes "besties" with one of the villains.
I don't think the books ever really commit to showing them all becoming couples, but they do all clearly pair off.
It's a big narrative thing that everyone except Snake bonds enough with someone else that they reveal their real names to each other.
Yeah but the previous Bad Guys movie clearly took things in different directions, it wasn't a one-to-one adaptation of the book even if it shared a lot of the same story beats. So they can shake things up, there's never a Dreamworks film where the adaptation is precisely like the source material.
Still, I can only hope that like the books each movie raises the stakes just a little bit more until you're coming to movie 4/5 thinking to yourself "weren't these heist movies? how did we get here?"

Did they stealth cancel it and just not say anything since it was never announced? It had some shit like an original owl villain in it that made bad puns, does anyone have those images?
It will probably also come out sometime this year and everyone will be outraged (again) that Dreamworks does what they always do. Though probably to a lesser extent now that the theatrical sequel is officially announced. The Bad Guys Christmas special probably served as a pilot to that series.

Some artists I follow have posted that they've been working on this movie for a while, so it does seem the mass layoffs at Dreamworks are almost exclusively the 3D animators and VFX team, concept artists and board artists still get jobs there.
