Can it ever be adapted in a way that keeps the mystery of the setting?

Only if everyone is made black and gay and any racist or sexist things are removed from it
    Sure

Sure, if you wanna go the dishonest way it's very easy to make Severian mixed since his race barely plays a part in the story. White people today love black Jesus.

        Take this passage for example:
        >When he relates the story of Thecla's death, he clearly means us to understand that he had no other way to save her from torture than by assisting her suicide. But much later he admits that he knew at the time that he could release her, instead, but didn't have the courage to do so. "We strive to repay the debts of the past with the debased currency of the present. At that counter I tendered Cyriaca's life in payment for Thecla's."

He tells Thecla he could save her but he had to betray the guild and kill several of his brothers in the way out. You also need to understand he was angry with Thecla because of the 'boy' comment. He thought she didn't love him and only after finds out he was wrong.

Unfilmable (unlike 99% of stuff ppl call unfilmable), and God willing, nobody will try. Let it remain unraped.

Based fricking Wolfe. Literally made his MC a rapist so only a director with balls could adapt his master piece

Dude frick off, don’t talk about this book and especially don’t talk about adapting it. Ruining Dune was bad enough

Would need someone actually good who doesn't rely on wide shots for cinematography. Dennis is out obviously. Most of it would need to be close shots of the characters. For example you could show the characters climbing the curtain walls to reach the Citadel but you'd need to conceal the rockets

Tfw I had a Dorcas girlfriend and this happened to me:

Dorcas belonged, as I now realize, to that vast group of women (which may, indeed, include all women) who betray us—and to that special type who betray us not for some present rival but for their own pasts.

Severian had issues. Why the hell did he think Dorcas was in love with Jolenta?

I don't really understand why people think this would ruin the story

it's been a while since i read this was that two-headed mummified dude actually some kind of demigod chosen one or was he just bluffing so Severian would give him the claw?

Iirc he was the Autarch from the time of the Conciliator. But it's implied Severian hallucinates that whole sequence.

So who are we casting? I offer Daisy Ridley for Agia and Jolenta is obviously Sydney Sweeney.
