What's the difference between a comic and a graphic novel?
Graphic novel is just a pretentious term for people who don't want to admit to reading comics.
Bigger book, sometimes stand-alone stories, other times collection of floppies.
If it has a spine, it's a graphic novel. If it doesn't, it's a [punchline goes here].
If they call it graphic novels instead of comic books they can include manga in the sales figures to maker their numbers look better.
Comics = staple stitch
Graphic Novel = perfect bound
This is a distinction made for the sake of sales charts.
Graphic novel = manga
Warms my heart
Give me the numbers without manga
Even if it is just manga growing thats still good for the industry as a whole I like to believe, better to be kept alive at with other stuff than going completly extinct.
It's only good in the sense that all of these other products - manga, toys, collectibles, tabletop games, etc - are helping to keep the LCS alive. Without the LCS, there would be no comics because no other retail segment wants them. But the inverse is not true.
I mean it wouldn't be an LCS without comics. More of an LS.
I meant that comic shops, and by extension comics, need manga and toys and games. But manga, toys, and games do not need comics and comics shops.
I'm not comparing the relative quality of these things. It's the result of how comics are sold. Nothing else is sold this way, with these kinds of terms. Which is why these sales list make a distinction between graphic novels and comics in the first place.
Fair point, but as long as the medium is around there is always a chance for a comeback for American comics
The medium is never going to die. But formats and distribution channels do.
Writing for people other thab just straight white cis males paid off.
