MD is artsy enough that people who don't usually watch those types of movies can see themselves as sophisticated for watching it yet also accessible enough that normies aren't completely put off. Also, lesbian sex.
>people who don't usually watch those types of movies can see themselves as sophisticated for watching it
People who don't usually watch those films will not enjoy Mulholland Drive, and probably not pay enough attention to "get it" either.
>I forget all of the parts that aren't memes.
There were no parts that aren't memes. Jackson's LOTR is basically the high-fantasy equivalent of the Star Wars prequels, just less incoherent and with less CGI.
Seriously, why no Shawshank or The Shining?
Too played out? Is that like picking Goku as your favorite character so you pick some side character instead?
these are all just 'social desirability bias + agenda pandering, the list'
any top x list that doesn't/can't explain its criteria at length and in depth can be instantly discarded
>that doesn't/can't explain its criteria at length
All of those are literally popularity polls among a somewhat diverse electorate. Therea are no "criteria" for those polls other than being the least common denominator or statistical compromise of whatever mix of individual tastes and personal criteria the voters have.
and I'm highlighting that this makes them useless as any sort of barometer of quality
Thanks. I'm not surprised that it's some homosexual French film directed by a woman, it's such a shame how far S&S has fallen.
>it's such a shame how far S&S has fallen.
yep. look at how good the 2002 director's list was (duplicate numbers indicate ties)
1. Citizen Kane (Welles)
2. The Godfather and The Godfather Part II (Coppola)
3. 8 1/2 (Fellini)
4. Lawrence of Arabia (Lean)
5. Dr. Strangelove (Kubrick)
6. Bicycle Thieves (De Sica)
6. Raging Bull (Scorsese)
6. Vertigo (Hitchwiener)
9. La Régle du jeu (Renoir)
9. Rashomon (Kurosawa)
9. Seven Samurai (Kurosawa)
I suppose it might be spicy of me to say that Strangelove, Raging Bull, and Seven Samurai are overrated, but they are still in the final analysis brilliantly-constructed movies
this was the last year they could be taken seriously
>Lawrence of Kazakhstania >Dumb Belgian prostitute and Her Boring Apartment, In the Mood for Chinks, The Man With the Movie Eyeball >Shin Megami Tensei: Persona 4 >Stalker: Shadow of Chernobyl, Boring Story of Japs in Tokyo, idk hippies or some shit, Oil Man Drinks Milkshake, The Conversation >Young Gus: A Breaking Bad Prequel, Treacherous French prostitute Gets What She Deserved
Hope that helped!
Maybe a really hot take but I never understood why 2001 is the only Kubrick movie that gets love. I think Paths of Glory is by the far the best thing he made, it's such a tightly-executed film, no fillers or lulls, every scene was just straight up kino. Maybe it doesn't really showcase alot of Kubrick's signature and maybe it's less broadly appealing as 2001, but it's perfect as far as pacing, acting, and direction goes.
It's the same reason critics use for Wong Kar Wai. ITMFL is his technical masterpiece and they acknowledge that, but Chungking is his most engaging and mass appeal film.
I’m massively aware of the influence that Vertigo had and I’ve seen it many times and studied it extensively. I don’t like it at all though. Tell me why the frick I should hold Vertigo to a higher regard than The Thing. Non-pseud answers only please, I don’t need anons who don’t even know who Saul Bass is or have never seen Caligari explaining Vertigo.
>Tell me why the frick I should hold Vertigo to a higher regard than The Thing.
Because The Thing is literal trash that only gets hyped for "le twist ending" by literal redditors who've never seen a good film in their lives.
>the thing is only hyped for the twist ending
Are you going to apologise to Ennio Morricone for being a homosexual? Are you going to apologise to Kurt Russell for not appreciating his capacity for producing kino performances? Are you going to apologise to Keith David for being one of the most based black men, no, black people of all-time? If you’re gonna call people pseuds for liking “le twist ending” then Vertigo can absolutely eat shit for that too.
Cinemaphile and s&s have the two worst charts there but for the opposite reasons. tv's is way too basic, meanwhile s&s is too insufferably pretentious because of the obvious reasons
I at least respect that cinephile types are aware of the standards. I think coping via being proud about 'authentically' being into slop and presuming that everyone else is lying because you don't enjoy what they like is, imo, gay
>I forced myself to sit through a shitty, boring two-hour movie that I didn't enjoy because some snooty homosexuals told me it was good >see, I have standards!
Keep on making yourself miserable by watching garbage you don't like anon, the only person you're hurting is yourself.
In the mood for love is boring tripe, should be replaced by Chungking express
TWBB is well acted but is it really that great?
I liked Mulholland Dr but is there something special hidden in it that every list mention it?
>is there something special hidden in it that every list mention it
It was my first mind blowing film and that's probably the same for many people. I obsessed over it for a long time as a teenager. I should rewatch it though to reassess my thoughts.
>is there something special hidden in it that every list mention it?
Yes, obviously
It's one of the best movies ever made, possibly one of the ten best
Best movie ever made is Forbidden Zone, though
i haven't watched beau travail, and your mother too, do the right thing and in the mood for love
do i miss anything worthwhile? they don't seem to be interesting
I haven't seen Beau or Y Tu Mama either, only ones on the chart I haven't. Do the Right Thing is worth seeing, it's very entertaining and will probably make you angry. Mood for Love is very, very good but not entertaining, it's a dreamlike emotional experience that was mostly improvised.
This 3x3 is the film and TV equivalent of saying you like The Beatles in highschool because it's safe to like because it's popular. Try saying you like something truly obscure or weird like Tusk and watch them break mentally or make fun of you lol.
Personally, I'd probably say Buster's Mal Heart is up there for me.
You realize that all these 3x3's are aggregates, right? Of course when you take a poll the safe, popular choices will be listed, that's what a popularity poll is.
>people just say they like The Beatles to fit in
This is absolutely stupid, fricking five year olds like The Beatles, they're the most accessible band there is
people make fun of you liking Tusk because that's a ridiculously stupid movie to choose as your favorite. Buster's Mal Heart left no impression on me, was he trying to save whales or write a novel or something? Only even remember it because I do a similar job as he does in it and it was comfy seeing it onscreen.
Order goes:
>Top: 1-2-3
>Middle: 4-5-6
>Bottom: 7-8-9
For each 3x3 in the image
>Do the Right Thing in any top ten list
What a shitty, overrated movie that is. Spike Lee is such a fricking hack.
>JEAN FRICKING DIELMAN
In the Mood for Love is NOT a top 9 movie of all time. Why the frick has it been elevated to such status in recent years?
BBC poll (same people as Sight and Sounds) for 21st century movies had it 2nd behind Mulholland Drive so everyone decided to rewatch it
Why is such an utterly mid movie as Mulholland Drive always ranked so high? Even if you’re a boring Lynch dweeb he has far better films.
MD is artsy enough that people who don't usually watch those types of movies can see themselves as sophisticated for watching it yet also accessible enough that normies aren't completely put off. Also, lesbian sex.
>people who don't usually watch those types of movies can see themselves as sophisticated for watching it

>t. midwit
You're not that special for enjoying Mulholland Drive anon
>t. braindead idiot completely missing the argument
Try reading the post again. Very slowly.
You are vastly underestimating the accessibility of Mulholland Drive
wtf i hate mulholland drive now
I've literally only seen LOTR and it's been so long I forget all of the parts that aren't memes.
>I forget all of the parts that aren't memes.
There were no parts that aren't memes. Jackson's LOTR is basically the high-fantasy equivalent of the Star Wars prequels, just less incoherent and with less CGI.

Too played out? Is that like picking Goku as your favorite character so you pick some side character instead?
2001 takes the Kubrick slot so that knocks out The Shining, meanwhile Shawshank is as the kids say "mid".
Shawshank is fricking dogshit
2001 already occupies the Kubrick film
Why the frick does everyone in these polls rathe The Godfather over The Godfather 2?
>The Bore, the Yawn and the Snore
As always, Cinemaphile has the worst taste.
It would be nice if these were labelled, I almost didn't recognise Blade Runner
I recognize every movie on the list except for Sight and Sound bottom left.
Beau Travail
Thanks. I'm not surprised that it's some homosexual French film directed by a woman, it's such a shame how far S&S has fallen.
Boring movies. Got any actual kinos that I wouldn't sleep on?

I don't think anybody ever saw them as that. I mean, the S&S poll literally voted Jeanne Dielmann to the top.
>The Matrix nowhere to be found
Boomer lists
ID for me please
>Cinemaphile #2
>S&S #1 #5 #9
>TSPDT #7
>peri #2 #3 #5 #8 #9
>cine #4 #5
Thank you beautiful
>Lawrence of Kazakhstania

some of these were very helpful, some very funny
>YAWWWWWWWN
BOOOOOORINGGGG!!! HERE'S SOME REAL KINO

Yeah that's my favorite Kubrick too

OUCH!!! GOTT'EM
the thing has twist ending?
I only know what 5 of these movies are and i've only seen 3 of them
To be fair, there's only five films on there worth knowing. But those probably aren't the ones you know.
I know lawrence of arabia (haven't seen), LOTR, 2001, godfather and good the bad and the ugly (haven't seen)
LOTR isn't worth it, the rest all range from decent to genuinely good.
My favorite movie is Robocop.
Okay. So what?
So please add it to the image.
Cinemaphile and s&s have the two worst charts there but for the opposite reasons. tv's is way too basic, meanwhile s&s is too insufferably pretentious because of the obvious reasons
When you finally grow up you'll realize that "basic" movies are way better than any slop people watch to try to make themselves look cultured.
I think the gays that act superior about being lame and basic are probably more annoying than the pretentious cinephiles but I'm not sure
Nah pretentious cinephiles are much worse. People are gay in general and can't just be honest about what they like and watch that.
I at least respect that cinephile types are aware of the standards. I think coping via being proud about 'authentically' being into slop and presuming that everyone else is lying because you don't enjoy what they like is, imo, gay

Yeah see the presumptive coping is just gay
>Cinemaphile is unironically the worst out of the bunch
