The french can’t make non-cringy movies.
It has Netflix cinematography, everything has a weird blue-green tinge. Could be worse, could have looked like the recent Three Musketeers movie, it looked so brown.
Looking forward to another adaptation that forgets that Mercedes is not supposed to be a love interest.
Maybe you should look forward to learning how to read, since you're completely wrong. Everything he does is motivated by his broken heart and when Mercedes realizes who he is she has an extremely emotional reaction.
Sure, it's fundamental to his character, but they don't get together at the end and live happily ever after. He just ships her off to some hole and fricks off with a far superior model.
That's true, they talk about how they're past the point of ever picking up the pieces iirc, I'm just saying they're definitely love interests, it's just a tragic love. If you put yourself in his shoes and the girl you love and are about to spend the rest of your life with winds up (even though ignorant of his crime) with the guy who falsely put you in prison and bears his children, you can understand how on the one hand you'd still have feelings for her strong enough to motivate your revenge, while on the other how she's ruined in your eyes and you can never be interested in her again. It's complicated but it's still ultimately love that drives the story.

I have the 90s Gérard Depardieu one on my hard drive and it's supposed to be good minus a changed happy ending but I tried watched it and all the characters acted like really stupid actors so I stopped

It could easily fit into one movie, there's a lot of filler because it was published serially and authors would try to make the paycheck stretch. The main plotpoints can fit into a film.
