Literally wtf? It was bad enough that the Proyas film made their death a retribution for them being just such darn good tenants of their apartment, but now it's some old grudge thing? Fricking terrible. The entire purpose and point of the tragedy in the real story is that the attack on Eric and Shelly was completely random, violence and terror for absolutely no reason but the wickedness of the world, of mankind.
James O'Barr wrote the story as a means of coping with the grief of the loss of the love of his life to a drunk driver- an utterly meaningless and pointless event which killed her and all but destroyed him. That meaningless horror is what inspired the story (along with a news story abouta young couple killed for a $20 engagement ring, also random and meaningless), is why he wrote the story, and Eric is a representation of how he felt and what he wished he could do.
The entire spirit of the story lies in this. Doing away with it so we understand Eric and Shelly = good, rapists and murderers = bad is fricking inane.
Completely agreed. There's a similar problem with Punisher adaptations making Frank and his family deliberate targets, rather than random bystanders. The point is that these characters suffer a random, awful fate, and the avenger's grief becomes a means of reordering the world, sometimes hopelessly.
If the tragedy is somehow provoked, then the story loses it's meaning.
