The Motorad ships aren't even that weird, the Big Zam is a UFO with legs and doesn't get any shit while everyone brings up the Motorad even though they make more sense as they're supposed to intimidate the enemy by steamrolling cities and the wheels split up to fly
The Motorad ships are a really dumb concept, because they still have completely unarmored bridges, so the whole "armored battleship that brings terror and people fruitlessly attack its main body" concept only works due to the cast acting really stupid whenever facing one.
To be fair that's a design flaw in so many sci-fi battleships it's just something you have to roll with.
