Terrible, even more so after watching the superior original Chinese trilogy. People who typecast marty as the mafia movies guy love this garbage it's like a 3 hour sopranos episode but without Gandolfini to make it bearable
Jack Nicholson does an amazing job in this cinema.
I too watched it recently. I thought it was pretty solid and entertaining; although I do have an issue with the general consensus about Wahlberg giving a "great" performance, I thought he was terrible and his acting was borderline distractingly bad. I have no idea why everyone says he gives an amazing performance, it's laughable.

it doesn't make any sense. how does a glowBlack person department get to vet glowie prospects while at the same time not answering directly to the board? so Martin Sheen is running a private insider company in cooperation with the feds but him and Marky Mark can somehow tell Leo that he can't be a glowie because his dad was a criminal? and also Mark gets fired for punching a guy but not for denying to provide crucial information? what a fricking moronic movie holy shit.
The concept only made sense in the Chinese original version iirc.

The entire second movie explains the backstory of the characters, for some reason Marty merged the subplot of the detective and the female criminal from the second movie with the subplot of the psychiatrist and the detective from the first movie. There are some weird decisions in Departed

The problem with Scorsese and Monahan is that they made Matt Damon's character too easy to jeer for by turning him into a hate sink who call the firefighters homos during the rugby scene, and having little to no remorse when the Captain played by Martin Sheen gets thrown off the rooftop.
