They do the same thing now every time they're being edgy, and that is explicitly stating to the audience that somebody is being edgy. Like that scene with Frank and Dee in this episode where he calls the duck moronic, that can't just be allowed to be funny, no, Dee has to explicitly tell Frank (The audience) that it's not okay to say moron and then Frank can justify why he's saying it. Where's the humor when you're being smashed in the face with a fricking brick that explains why its okay to laugh?

It’s less that they’re dumb and more that they’re less believably dumb. The gang has always been dumb, but they weren’t always cartoonishly dumb in every scene. It takes away from Charlie’s character when everyone is that level of stupid. Frank kind of gets a pass for living with Charlie in squalor for this long, and Devito has the talent to make manic delivery and physical comedy land. Dee and Dennis are allowed to be dumb when it’s an ego-related or part of some scheme, preferably both; neither would actually admit to being dumb as Dennis essentially did in the first episode of this season (without deflecting in some way, ie “Why would anyone know what inflation is?”). Mac is dumb, but it leans into stunted, dependent man-child territory…or at least, it should. His eagerness to be accepted, naivety, and hypocrisy make him a very splash-able character to use in scripts, but the writers aren’t really utilizing him like that anymore.
Ultimately, I think everyone has been dumbed down to ensure the audience knows the characters are written to be bad people. It’s the same reason why can’t have wrongthink in the show without someone pointing out that it’s wrongthink. Add this on top of flanderization, and the characters just aren’t believable. This is all at the expense of comedy (“show, don’t tell”).
