It’s Tom Cruise. It’ll make 1 billion minimum.

I mean the same thing could be said about Transformers and Indiana Jones.

Not really. Tom Cruise is probably the biggest A-lister alive and hasn’t produced a flop in who knows how long. Maverick was probably his most successful film in decades, and that was just last year.

Indiana Jones was a film no one was gagging for made by a studio that had a reputation for wrecking franchises with stupid decisions. Transformers had been losing audience for years. The Gross on Mission Impossible films has actually been going up with each film over the last 27 years.

Definitely not Indiana Jones after the crystal skull. And transformers movies have been trending downwards for a while.

Tom Cruise is the last action hero, the last star in the sky. Top Gun Maverick, a sequel to a film that came out 30 years prior, managed to fly across the 1 billion mark during memorial day weekend last year. Mission Impossible is a franchise known for having consistently good films that only get better the longer they go on. Nobody in my friend group knew that there was a new Indiana Jones movie coming out, but everyone knows about Mission Impossible. He appeals to the masses, it won't bomb.

I might see it but I don't like the idea of having to wait a year for the second part. Fricking annoying. If it's released to on demand quickly I'll pay to watch it on that.

That doesn't surprise me. Assuming you're not bullshitting how much of a cliffhanger is it left on?

Satisfying ending but a cliffhanger. The end reminded me of the first level of Uncharted 2 in the train

So it opens with a massive disaster as a framing device then works its way backwards to the halfway point of the story where it seems like all is almost lost?

My only concern is even after part two "Tom Cruise might not be done with Ethan Hunt". At some point you lose any dramatic intensity and turn into Marvel.

MI7 part 2 will end with Ethan sacrificing himself to save the world, and Cruise dying in the ultimate stunt

It’s got less to do with the movies themselves than money being tight. Inflation is taking its toll and people are more careful of their spending. That means movie nights at home, cooking meals at home etc. unless it’s a must see theater experience people will just wait to stream it. Got to justify having that big screen tv in the LR

I feel like there is not nearly as much hype for MI7 as there as for Top Gun: Maverick. Using the 2.5 multiplier, it needs to make $725 million to break even. It might be doable, but I have my doubts.

      Anonymous

That $290 million budget covers both part 1 and 2, right?

        Anonymous

I would think so, Cruise isnt as stupid as Disney or Warner, he understands the economics of filmaking. If it is $150m for both then he's looking at $500million global for each film break even.

          Anonymous

Part 1's budget is nearly 300 mil. Part 2 might cost more, unless Elon is footing the bill.

            Anonymous

Part 1's budget was inflated due to covid shutdowns, it's likely Part 2 will cost less even if he goes to space

They shouldn’t have stuck the PART ONE thing onto this one. People who half care are just gonna wait until part two. They wisely didn’t pull that with DUNE.

As long as the movie is good, word of mouth will spread just like it did with Top Gun Maverick. If I remember correctly, Maverick did extremely well because of word of mouth.

bros what happens when Tom Cruise, Brad Pitt and Leonardo DiCaprio retire? Who will be the A listers then? Hollywood has a huge issue with talent right now it feels like.

I'm 35 and all the top rated, top earning actors and actresses of my youth have not been replaced, many of them are still going long past the point where they ought to have retired. Jake Gyllenhaal and the Goose are arguably the last of their kind, and even as much as I like both of those guys and their talents, they're nowhere near the caliber of mega star the other guys I mentioned once were. Not to mention they're both already well into their 40s.

But hollywood doesn't even look for talent any more, just the right skin color or lgbt category.

There won't be any, they'll attempt to force the likes of Timmy Charlemagne and Zendaya but they're charisma voids.
The new A-listers will be Youtubers, Twitch Streamers and Tik Tok-ers.
It's probably already happening, your average zoomer can pick Pewdiepie or Ninja out of a lineup before Brad Pitt.
