I never liked the idea of remnants of the empire surviving and continuing the fight. They did it in the EU and I was glad Disney dropped that. But then they did the same, but worse.
Why couldn't they think about something new? Why even bring back the republic? It was clearly unpopular before its fall. After the end of the empire the whole galaxy should be in a state of chaos with everyone against everyone as there's no unifying source anymore.
A more interesting approach, despite being hack as frick, would be to emulate post-WWII events like Nazis fleeing to Argentina. That's the only way the resistance bullshit would have worked instead of just rehashing the original trilogy.
Or make the big bad come from another galaxy.

The space battle scenes in the original star wars were copied 1:1 from literal WW2 gun cam footage. The TIE fighters literally took the places of German fighter planes. The empire was always Germany
So why do the Rebels getting their medal at the end recreate a scene from Triumph of the Will? George ripped of aesthetics from WW2, and placed them all over, but his actualy political intentions were very high level.

I was thinking more about the end of Western Roman Empire or post-WW1 Europe. Something new? New powers, new planets becoming important, new factions with new ideologies.

What I wanted was some sort of role reversal of the OT, with the Jedi siding with a new republic that was established by the rebel alliance fighting against remnants of the empire who are pretty much a desperate guerrilla in rags.

Lucas added all those scenes of people celebrating the fall of Palpatine, so most systems probably weren't happy about being part of the empire. It's like the collapse of Austria-Hungary or tsarist Russia. If there was an ideology similar to our nationalism in the Star Wars universe then it's not hard to imagine a complete collapse of the empire right after its leader was defeated.
