Paul was fricking fantastic
>Imagine he beats Murphy for best actor.
Actually good movies up this year what a shock.

Giamatti is a GOAT
Looks fun and comfy. I'll have to check this one out soon.
It's honestly one of those movies that makes you feel like you'll turn your whole life around tomorrow. Don't miss out. Beyond the feelgood stuff it's just good performances all around. One of the least cynical movies I've seen in some time.
>feel like you'll turn your whole life around tomorrow
Too late for me. I'm turning 30 next month.. thanks for reading my tweet.
I fricking wish I could go back to 30
Anyone have that image of him smugly smoking a pipe
He's just like me.
Really like the movie. I could've swore the I've seen the kid in other movies, but apparently it was his first movie. Who the frick am I thinking of? Or am I thinking of some musician?
This kid has some fricking chops. I was worried he was going to be playing a smug protagonist types like in the sex comedies of old (I'm not a prude but those movies tend to be asinine) but kid was very compless and he had a lot of good stuff to work with.
The lunch lady played by Joy was an excellent character to. You could see the anger and disappointment in her face.
All three characters were trapped and weren't living for themselves. In the end, they were taking small steps braving the world on their own.
Just solid stuff all around. Damn funny too.
Dominic Sessa, he's a theater kid who got the part because they offered Deerfield Academy students a chance to audition since they were using that school as a filming location, and yes he was fricking great I hope he gets more opportunities and this wasn't a one time thing.
He looks and sounds and has the same mannerisms as Finn in Sopranos. I thought immediately it was that guys son, but naw just some rando discovered for this movie.
this kid mogs the current lineup of twink actors in hollywood, I hope he gets a career out of this performance
I think best actor and actress are locked up unfortunately, even though I think Giamatti and Emma Stone deserve it more
Can you imagine the butthurt if Giamatti got snubbed again? Lol
He wasn't even nominated for Sideways while his two costars were, which is fricking nuts. He won't win this year though. The only reason why he won the Golden Globe was because Murphy was in a different category.
Did he even get an Emmy for John Adams on HBO? If not this dude just gets snubbed on the reg.
>Paul was fricking fantastic
Standard.
i loved that they made the movie look like it was made in the 80s, not just the costumes but the film stock and the way its shot and edited. Literally looks like you could find it on tape at the video store
yeah, they did a good job with that but caught a bunch of criticism by doing it digitally instead of just shooting on film. i thought it looked great.
>criticism by doing it digitally instead of just shooting on film. i thought it looked great.
the cost was probably too much for the budget and yeah they did do a good job of faking it.
Why the frick don't more filmmakers utilize this technique to make their movies look good and comfy?
Why is 99% of everything now flat and ugly and shit, when it can be easily avoided?
This movie was so good it makes me angrier that more movies aren't like it
would you say that Once Upon A Time In Hollywood achieves this same feeling for you?
i really want someone to make a period film and revive that old technicolor look.
Pearl did that
This film was even better than X. Towards the end of the film when her friend knew she was doomed but did her best not to show she was scared was excellent tension. Of course she couldn't stick the landing, but its rare for a horror movie to make you truly feel sorry for someone.
They might ruin that franchise with too many sequels though.
I watched a video on it recently. According to the cinematographer making it look period correct using film would have involved degraining the image and then re-graining it to look right, so they just cut out the middle man. Hell if I understand why though.
His performance is the only one on the level of Cillian. I just don't think he'll be able to beat him out.
This movie was excellent, in my top 5 this year.
im not watching your dogshit
buy an ad california homosexual
Top 3 films of 2023 for me with Godzilla Minus One and The Killer.
He was in a movie with Sarah Gadon
Is that why he wanted to kill R Pat in the movie, cuz he was jelly of dipping in the Gadon River?
I truly think he can beat Cillian
the only way is if the excitement over Oppenheimer wore off a bit since it was released so much earlier, but I really doubt it. Have you ever read the anonymous voter articles about why they voted the way they did? They're absolute plebs
No. Cillian was doing deep state propaganda cause. Giamatti did a Newyorker-esque story. Who do you think will win?
I really hope so, dude deserves 6 oscars already at least
shit he deserves one for Ironclad
how many movies will alexander payne make about high school teachers? this is at least the third.
at least he's starting to get out of Nebraska
The Descendants was in Hawaii and it was also kino
The Descendants is good but definitely lower tier Payne for me. I've been saying that The Holdovers is closest to The Descendants tone wise, but just way better.
it's at three, yeah. the original Sideways book had Miles being a screenwriter for Hollywood. He enjoys people that are ruining their potential
Why do people act like this - admittedly decent - flick is so great?
It's great compared to the kind of stuff that normally gets released nowadays.
It's rare you get a film that isn't cynical Hollywood slop or fake arthouse bullshit with nothing to actually say. Entertaining, uplifting, and the production was mint.
tfw im a loser HS teacher too but unlike him i still am a hardass moron
Mentor a troubled student and see what happens.
WHATEVER YOU DO DON'T FRICK THEM
haven't seen this yet, but I will watch anything Paul Kinomatti is in
Unironically one of the best movies of the last several years.
I really enjoyed it and think it's one of the best of the year, but also recognize how basic and run of the mill the plot points are. it's nothing extraordinary plot wise, but a lot of it is the performances and coming out at the right time.
Name one(1) movie that is better. I’ll wait.
Other than the BlackRock-mandated sheboon it's pretty comfy
Get dunked on, chud.
i thought she was great in this. i remember seeing complaints that she was some "magical black woman" cliche but she literally had her own shit going on but told the leads to shut the frick up when they were fighting sometimes.
She was unironically great. Reminded me of every lunch lady I've ever known who is warm and gracious on the outside nmbyt a legitimate wreck internationally.
The entire film is 3 characters with bs personas learning to move on from the baggage holding them back.
I agree with anon that the plotting wasn't spectacular but the performances elevated the material.
>Alexander Payne
thanks for pushing your movie.
I will not fall for this shit again. nice try.
Downsizing did suck, but the rest of his kinography is great
About Schmidt
Election
Nebraska
Descendants
Sideways
Sideways sucks
so does your mom
they don't make movies like this anymore. was really good
>7 hour goon sesh
But seriously, I don't think I've heard anything about this in bongland, maybe I've missed it, maybe it hasn't been released yet, but I've heard nothing but good things about it from my internet frens
It isn't out here until January 19th, but there are some places where you can watch it online. I caught it early on that Rido Movies place that's linked in /film/ threads
giamatti is an atheist dnc stooge cuck who sold his son into israelitery. this is just a sly ~~*feelgood*~~ agitprop about how we all should just le get along xD
Very good movie.
>Actually good movies up this year what a shock.
last year was way better.
The holdovers was top3 of the year though.
He's better than Murphy, but Oppenheimer is going to sweep the board like Titanic and Return of the King.
I liked it but there were a few too many redundant scenes of them bickering at a dinner table. We only needed one of those to get the point. Could have cut some fat off the runtime, but otherwise a breath of fresh air compared to most movies in 2023
