As we've seen this generation things can swing insanely far in a very short period of time. Zoomers absolutely love anime so it would not surprise me if the dominant counter culture of the next generation on youth were not as into it.

That's completely fine. The talent that is necessary to make the really good shows comes from picking out the good creators from the endless churned slop and elevating them. You gotta let creators create slop if you want them to create kino, behind every single artist in existence is a long forgotten but gigantic gallery of absolutely terrible art.
Purging all of your slop and lesser projects to go for blockbusters also purges your talent pool, which is what Disney did to ruin themselves, among many many other things.
This is also why AI is going to be garbage when it finally infects all of animation, all the talentless hacks are going to be flooding in because there is no way to filter for the good ones.

Watch the first Gundam series, then the next one that was produced (Zeta Gundam) and the next one, and so on...
      It's not hard.

      Anonymous

Start from the beginning. The original show is great, although the animation can be quite rough. If 52 episodes is too much of a commitment, you can watch the compilation movies instead. Then just watch in order, skipping the stuff that you don't like. Tomino's works are the most important, but he's a based moron and occasionally puts out some real slop (Double Zeta).

      Anonymous

Gundam '79 is actually kino. Amuro Ray is a GOAT character. Zeta Gundam (direct sequel to 79) is a huge visual and audio upgrade but the story is a little shaky. I watched Double Zeta (sequel to zeta) and I regret it - try it out but if you're not feeling it just read a synopsis. After that is the movie.

        Anonymous

Zeta I wouldn't call shaky, just poorly paced. You're so used to the filler episodes when shit finally hits the fan in the Gryps conflict it's almost entirely over. Amuro and Kamille are the GOATs

I dislike most Japanese stuff, but I have to admit that at least that they're willing to experiment with new ideas, not lose sight in entertaining people, and not trying to spread pozzed shit like US companies do.

Honestly, seeing how a Godzilla and Miyazaki film is doing better in US box office than Disney movies sums up what's wrong with modern execs. When the Japanese of all people are starting to encroach our entertainment industry, you know Hollywood is too far gone.

I grew up reading comics in the late 90's and all of the 00's. There's a reason why manga is outselling US comics (outside of indies) because there's an actual beginning and an eventual ending. No shitty retcons or DONUT STEEL that these newbie woke writers are trying to put in. We have nobody but ourselves for letting this happen.

Much of artistic works have some kind of ideology bent behind it, but at least the Japanese recognize to try and divorce their feelings when making stuff.

It's less that they divorce their feels and more that you can enjoy it without connecting with the themes.

          >Much of artistic works have some kind of ideology bent behind it
Totally. The problem is how Hollywood decided to write ideological pamphlets, not works of art with some politics accidentally leaking here and there. They forgot the entertaining part.

I think it's funny you opened with Japan being keen to support new ideas, only to then immediately start talking about a long-established franchise and director.

Japan is as guilty as the west is in relying on franchise slop. They only difference is that you have far fewer people openly campaigning to subvert an IP's appeal for political reasons.

Disney has completely shot itself in the foot with its wokeness and abandoned being a family-friendly feature. They just want to cater to the 1% of loud crazies.

Anime has its share of NEETs and other creepy shut-ins as well as nonsensical crap, but the main intent is to entertain. Plus they still make anime intended for only kids (even in the 90's, a lot of anime studios got in trouble for putting mature content in timeslots aimed for general audiences) as well as the sub-niche of teen and adult fans.

Much like Lucas, Tomino's insistence on Gundam being "anti-war" is just window dressing to make a franchise created to sell toys sound deeper than it is after it became a hit. War and environmentalism only became memes in the 90s thanks to Michael Jackson, 80s Tomino was more concerned with his female characters being amply endowed in the pubic regions so his male characters didn't look like gays.

If it were antiwar the actual Gundam pilots would become despicable human beings through their actions. Amuro's refusal to fight in the early episodes is never presented as a sign of his superior morality, it's presented as him being a little b***h. Judau rides off into the sunset in a blaze of glory. Only Kamille really suffers. There is never any moment which portrays them as being worse off than if they had never started fighting in the first place. "Muh Newtypes muh weighed down by Earth's gravity muh Oedipus" is pretty much the only "deep" philosophical themes in the first Tomino Gundam series.

WitP was the most overtly antiwar early Gundam, and Tomino wasn't involved in the story.

There's still plenty of other anime directors.

Anime is being infested with moeshit and isekai, but it has its cycles. So long as there's still a viable manga industry in Japan, there's always going to be anime adaptations as well as original series being made. I'm willing to bet a grand on Japan's animation and comics industry over the US.
