It has no actual plot. It's even more thinly veiled than a fricking Scott Adkins DVD action movie. No plot. homosexual Redditors will insert headcanon and their own delusional intepretations to save face but this is just shit. Fassbender was good and that Florida fight scene was excellent but there's nothing there. It being Netflixslop gave it no chance.

It would have been kino if not for the shitty narration. Has fincher not seen Day of the Jackal? That movie is one extra hour of a silent autist just driving around and preparing for a hit. And it's considered a classic. This has a hit every 15-30 minutes and it still feels like he doesn't trust the audience to not get bored.

would be infinitely more kino if there was a twist, like in FC. he was imagining everything, in the end he was just a gamer obsessed with The Hitman series. there was no client, no target. just his mom screeching that tendies were ready.

                That's an old twist though.

                >he's a lab subject imagining everything
                >he's in a dream/coma imagining everything
Though how about he's imagining himself to be The Killer© while killing innocent people and being a schizo murderer thusly.

yeah true. i mean fincher is well known since Se7en and FC, so why not make the twist be as you said:
                >fassbender goes around killing targets who he thinks are his "assignments"
                >second act reveals he has no handler, no clients, nothing, he's just a schizo serial killer
                >third act culminates in shootout with feds who have been tracking him this entire time but he eludes them because of his super paranoid tactics

that's a bit too out there. just make him a schizo hitman that starts to question his own reality. have him see people he's killed wandering around outside like nothing ever really happaned. have him think people are out to get him and have him go on a paranoid schizo killing spree, etc.

The clients/the handler? Could be people he knew personally (from his past)or knows personally. (Kinda like how in The Machinist the airport woman Christopher Bale meets up with is well you know the spoiler)

I really don't get what they were going for with the whole rambling voice over and him apparently "breaking his own rules" despite there never being no consequences to it. not to mention him getting all weepy over his nameless gf we only get to see for like 10 seconds AFTER she's been beaten and raped and is laying in a hospital bed. is the entire point of the movie that he secretly isn't a violent sociopath? the ending tries to tell you so, but I never really felt it. besides him not dissapearting the secretary because she wanted her children to find her body. the movie's insitence reminded me of the latest Hitman games. which also try to shove the fact that a cold blooded killer "ackshually has hidden emotion and le childhood trauma". like, who gives a shit? it just makes him more lame. do normalgays really need to see a sensitive side to every fricking main character in existence? even those that literally kill people for money?

Fincher even calls it a B-movie. Problem is that he doesn't know how to make one. Tonally, I mean. It's way too grim and nihilistic.

                >Fincher even calls it a B-movie
To avoid criticism by being judged by higher standards. He's too self-conscious to make one. He's aware of his status and aware of what the critics/film snobs want. So he makes a self-conscious movie with a filmmaking style that's too slick for its own good. There are nihilistic B-movies but Fincher lacks the edge/visceral nature these days. Last time he had it was Zodiac.

I don't know what the frick is up with him these days. Mindhunter was amazing and he just dropped it two seasons in, despite it being planned and set up for at least five. I get that he wanted to film his dad's script and all, but what about this? Why did he waste years making this instead of returning to the show? A favour for an old friend, or something? This material is so fricking beneath him, it's unreal. The script is awful. No amount of visual polish can change that.

The last scene before it cuts to black might indicate otherwise. There's a visible eye twitch implying he just enjoys killing. Doesn't care for the normie life. Pretty much the whole point of Q-Tip's joke.

the eye twitch is him being unnerved by the fact that he's one of the many. his emotional side is real. the movie wouldn't have happened if it wasn't. he wouldn't have gone out of his way to tak out the two people that hurt the girl. since he knows it's just business. he killed them because he WANTED to. which completely contradicts his mantra of "only fight the battles you're paid to fight". his handler even points out how reckless it was for him to return home. that he should have left the girl and gone off the grid the second he left Paris.

See the truth is, the comic that the movie is based on is different. They humanize the assasin much more, they show how he started and the catalyst isn't him screwing up but him observing his target and seeing him put in 6 sugar cubes, and while he was observing this he couldn't kill him anymore because putting in so much sugar was such a weird act that made him a human. That's why you see that happening in the beginning of the movie, it's an easter egg. So Finched put in these elements as a homage, but ultimately the killer in Fincher's movie is way more brutal and to the point.

                Anonymous

He's still supposed to be humanized. The writing in the movie is just way worse and relies on cheap lines like "how's giving a frick going?" and him contradicting his own narration to clue you in. Also what:

the eye twitch is him being unnerved by the fact that he's one of the many. his emotional side is real. the movie wouldn't have happened if it wasn't. he wouldn't have gone out of his way to tak out the two people that hurt the girl. since he knows it's just business. he killed them because he WANTED to. which completely contradicts his mantra of "only fight the battles you're paid to fight". his handler even points out how reckless it was for him to return home. that he should have left the girl and gone off the grid the second he left Paris.

Wait, what? The EXACT same thing happens in the anime Monster. A professional assassin sees his target put 5 spoons of sugar in his coffee and the assassin has an epiphany that he's no enjoying life and that his perfectionism is meaningless.

That's right, i mistook it for that. I guess it was an easter egg about that. I re-read the comic and that part never happened, my memories just conflated the two. But it is true that the movie is way colder than the comics, where he even gets a team going that helps him with the killings.

He gets an autistic twitch right at the end.
Everything he says is recycled from somewhere else.
He even repeats Tilda Swinton's little wisdoms at the end.

All the false identities are meant to clue into it I think.
Particularly as they're all obviously from sitcoms.
Everything he is seems to be appropriated from outside (I bet his goofy autism outfit is from a movie too, not a rando German tourist), in the service of explaining what he does or why he does what he does. Which suggest he doesn't know why he does it really. He just likes the ritual of it or something. It's a puzzle obsession like we saw with House and his medical mysteries.

The fear we saw in his face at times was his fear of him not being able to keep doing it. So he erased everyone who knew what was going on, bar the client because I guess he didn't want it getting out that he's too dangerous to hire and he couldn't be sure the rich guy hadn't secreted details of it somewhere. If anything the rich guy will tell his buddies of the close call he had and this guy's rep would go off the charts. A guy who can get in anywhere just to deliver a message. He even baited the guy with different murder methods, like he implanting the idea that not everything needs to be a bullet, or quick.

Imagine thinking that any sort of creative will keep churning out masterpieces after masterpieces decades into their work. Same as Scorsese gays. There are almost zero exceptions to this (say Kubrick).

Yeah I think he didn't want to have cops on his ass since killing a wealthy man is higher profile than some random dude. Just threatening him was enough.

Because in the end the customer is always right. Plus the killer realizes that Claybourne simply doesn’t care about him or his and is above all of those dynamics between assassins and their targets. He forgot about it as soon as he paid the insurance. In the end he turns out as cold and detached as Fassbender’s character wishes he was himself

At the very start of the Claybourne chapter, he literally says that the severity of law enforcement’s response is measured on the net worth of the victim, and that Claybourne is a risky target because of this. As he makes his way into Claybourne’s apartment he also states that he knows how this will go down based on his read of Claybourne’s eyes. When he confronts him, he realizes Claybourne is of the same cloth as Dolores and the Taxi Driver. They do have thin ties to the underworld life Fassbender is involved in, but they’re really just bystanders who don’t know what’s really going on. Whereas the other people he intentionally kills are seasoned players of the same game he’s involved with, they know the score. He spares Claybourne because he knows he isn’t going to come back at him, and the juice simply isn’t worth the squeeze.

      Anonymous

Clayborne couldn't even pronounce Hodges name right, he called him Hedges. It was the lawyer that suggested to him to get rid of the K*_ller after failing his job. That and Claybornes death could've meant the end of the K*_ller after being recorded by camers while entering his apartment.

Good movie, good parallel to Fincher's own career. The fight in the middle was better than everything in those John Shit movies. Ending it with fassbender realizing that he's just a normie and essentially accepting defeat in the grand scheme of things, not making a braindead mistake by outright killing the billionaire, all so he can continue living, was perfect.

no. it's just an empty movie about a rembling autist you don't know or care about killing 3 shitty people you don't know care about until it just ends. there's also only one action scene in the entire movie.

        Anonymous

And the "action scene" was pretty shit. Just felt bored the entire time watching mid fight choreography youd see in any generic action movie and thinking that the average jui jitsu grappler could beat either of these guys in about 30 seconds. I don't really like the John Wick movies but I think people appreciate those fight scenes because the character employs an actual self defense style that's applicable in real life fighting scenarios. In this movie you watch 2 trained killers who look like they've never been in a fight before.
I guess it was funny when the guy got his butthole impaled on a chair leg at least

Also im so sick of movies using the " whip a persons neck sideways = instant death" trope. Not only would it require basically inhuman strength to break a person's neck like that, but nothing about it would cause an immediate death, just paralysis

This movie makes much more sense when you realize it was written by Andrew Kevin Walker. Fincher's old buddy from Se7en. This was literally just a side-project that Fincher agreed to do for his friend.

The writing in this was so bad. The Killer caused all of his own problems, shouldve been caught multiple times, half the people he killed didn't make sense to kill and the 2 people he spared are the 2 people who could've gotten him caught. Also his philosophizing narration sounded like it was written by an edgy midwit 15 year old. Fassbender's acting felt phoned in too, or maybe hes just not a very good actor

The billionaire was told they were gonna tie up loose ends so he wouldnt have any exposure. So he knew they were gonna do something to the hitman that had been used. But he obviously had no idea the guy had a girlfriend who would end up getting involved.
But Fassbenders character had no reason to even think the billionaire would have know he had a girlfriend or expressly signed off on anything related to the hitmans family or significant others to begin with. Why would he? Fassbender didn't learn anything talking to the billionaire that he shouldn't have just already assumed with common sense
But Fassbenders character was a total moron so I guess it makes sense for him

Fincher WISHES this movie was as earnest as John Wick. At least when you watch those flicks you already know you're going to see a live action video game with no stakes made by a literal who director. Not a single person involved in this project expected it to be anything less than high cinema because of Fincher's resume. And the terrible audience reactions reflect it.

Yes. He was the only person who was high profile enough for their assassination to put pressure on anyone who was responsible.

          >If he wanted "security", how about not letting him know you exist, are still alive and showing him and his security cameras your face?
So much of this movie is about how the killer isn't actually perfect at his job. But the gist I got from their entire interaction was that the billionaire was so oblivious and detached from what calling a hit actually entailed that he didn't even imagine that it could have undue consequences. Just compare his reaction to seeing the killer for the first time to Tilda Swinton's.

How much blame/praise should a director get for a script they didn't write? Most criticism I see for this, and other Fincher films, usually comes down to the story or script. Should that be laid at his feet even if he consistently elevates the material he is given/chooses?

It's front loaded, I wish the back half had more philosophizing and random quotes. The comic had more edge to it, I'm disappointed this didn't too. Solid movie but clearly lower budget. That said, this movie is all direction.

Yeah, the secobd half REALLY fizzles out into nothing. He kills the brute. Has a slow chat with Tilda Swinton before taking her out back and blowing her brains out. And then just casually strolls into the rich guys apartment to threaten him before he retires. Like, what? That's it?!

        Anonymous

        >The second half REALLY fizzles into nothing
Yeah I agree, I was baffled at everything Tilda onward when I saw it in the theater but it makes a little more sense after watching it again. He is inches away from Tilda in the car and she doesn't notice him, it just goes to show how lazy she'd become. She didn't care anymore. Her time was up.

He waltzes into the billionaire's apartment which more or less shows the powerful aren't really that smart or gifted. He's presented as a dork who runs on the treadmill in jeans. Fassbender makes it obvious the billionaire had no idea why he was there about to kill him. The Brute raped his girlfriend. Fassbender didn't even have bullets in the gun because he wasn't gonna risk exposure without knowing the truth. The background TV in the apartment is talking about the Euro vs. the US dollar which loops back to what the hit in the opening was really about.

The movie operates as a metaphor for filmmaking and acting but also as a satire or comment on the present. The comic goes much deeper into the socio-political angle of assassinations, murder, genocide, and more, so I think this was a little lacking. I wonder how much the final scene was Fincher making a jab at Zuckerberg "I'll be back" because none of that is in the comic. It's my personal interpretation anyway.
