The actual Lone Ranger character looked dumb. I get that he wore that stupid mask back in the day but he was sorely in need of an update and by update I mean no mask ever
Almost coomed my pants as a lad when Zorro cut that girl’s dress off in a split second but it took a few moments for the dress to actually fall off her anime style.
>depp playing a native >gay ass pulp hero nobody gives a shit about >in the height of mcu movies and fast and furious shit
this shit never had a chance
Didn’t this come out right in between Pirates 2 & 3? By that point while everyone did love the Jack Sparrow character we were developing Johnny Depp fatigue and with this became sick of his “is now always a le whacky weirdo man” schtick. Probably would have been more well received if Johnny Depp played the main character who is more or less a normal guy, Johnny Depp playing a cowboy might have been cool, and some other actor could play the whackier Tonto character. Everyone rolled their eyes collectively and said “wtf is this, Indian Jack Sparrow?” Any other reason anyone else ITT is giving is wrong, what I said is why.
Yeah this is the correct take. This is the exact thought I had at the time too.
"Oh great johnny Depp is now ripping off Jack sparrow for other movies"
Has nothing to do with the IP like a bunch of other anons have said. It's a weirdly grim, unnecessarily dark movie, especially given that it's a fun property and a Disney family movie. You have a dark western with a gritty tone constantly being interrupted by Johnny Depp doing nonstop Johnny Depp wacky shit. It's a movie that satisfies absolutely nobody. The train scene is kino though, and has both a fun heroic tone and minimal Depp, so there was a decent idea buried deep in the slop we got.
Too much Johnny Depp and it took itself too seriously
johnny depp doing whacky shit is funny and i'm tired of pretending it's not
It WAS back when his roles would be mixed with things like Donnie Brasco. All Johnny’s roles since Jack Sparrow have been variations of his Willy Wonka or whatever that was.
Forgot about that. Did not watch. But even then wasn’t Johnny in heavy makeup and doing a zany character? Johnny was costumed up like some wrinkled old Prometheus man wasn’t he?
I agree with this. Read a book about him like 5 years ago. I think there is a shitty movie already, but yeah a duel wielding black US Marshall who takes lawbreakers to a judge to hangs everyone.
A bunch of tabloid journos wanted to take Depp down a peg so they started a mean-spirited smear campaign aimed at him, which led to Disney not marketing the film.

>No reason for it to cost that much
Aside from a large portion of the budget going towards Depp's paycheck, they also reconstructed old steam engines and built an entire railroad along with a bridge and most of the derailment stunts were real
I went through a couple year period where I didn’t watch tv or movies at all when this came out. I didn’t know anything about it except it had gotten bad reviews, but I think critics are gays so I went in wanting to like it. I walked out halfway through, it’s just a shitty movie.
It's not a bad movie, it's just not remarkable at all.
I always compare it to Wild Wild West, and that is infinitely more rewatchable and actually has crazy shit happening.
Also Depp as Tanto, I don't give a shit that it's whitewashing or whatever but they should've gotten someone funnier.

Nobody remembers this boomer IP.
So? A lot of books and comics adapted are old
*a kino blocks your path*
top notch movie

Did “IPs” even exist as such back then?

with the exception of that black mass which causes second hand embarrassment still

Bass Reeves was an actual badass. If they wanna make diversity happen, why not make a true to life Lone Ranger?

idk shitty marketing probably because the movie was good

>PotC in the west
>problematic indian
>goofy looking "hero"
indian
They could've fixed the writing like they did with Wong
jej
ever heard of marketing, bucko?

>kino train chase finale
>William Fichtner making a great psycho villain
Frick it, I love it.
These movies were really starting to get bloated. I don't know why Hollywood wanted these mindless adventure flicks to run 2+ hours
Yeah, I'm glad they're now investing money into troony/Black person filled remakes and superhero movies instead
Something looks off with Helena Bohnam Carter who I didn’t even know was in this movie. Like they photoshopped half her bottom jaw off.
Reboot of a dead and buried IP that nobody gave shit about.

No reason for it to cost that much.
They should’ve made it for $50 Million and gave it room to have a sequel.
>No reason for it to cost that much

Wow imagine if they doubled down on that type of stuff and made the movie 90 minutes shorter. Could have been goat.
so sell the trains to fund the sequel

I watched this in theaters and I completely forgot about it.
cause it was garbage
One of the worst movies I've ever seen
