The main problem with "Anime-Influenced Animation" as Wikipedia calls it (some are calling it "Diet Anime") is that lack of originality in animation art becomes even more intensified when you're trying to emulate other people's pre-existing art (& direction) styles to begin with

Part of the problem is that they never actually emulate and learn from interesting animator styles, and there are plenty of standout animators, I've never seen a single animesque show and said "well, they're clearly inspired from x animator"

I would take a hundred shows with any of those art styles over shit like Rick and Morty/Big Mouth/Adventure Time

I'll defend AT, hell I'll go so far as to say that it has great character designs

Jake the dog, princess bubblegum, huntress wizard, ice king, the lich, etc are all good designs imo

I'll get mocked and green texted but ah well

I liked Adventure Time too anon and I'm not saying cartoons with that art style can't be made, I would just prefer more shows with art like at least like that Superman show or ATLA/LoK.

Fair! To me outside of avatar, the 3 shows listed don't do much for me stylistically

They are usually animated by koreans instead of japanese so these shows always will feel different to regular anime.

Is something wrong with me for finding most anime designs boring? To me they always look samey and bland yet to everyone else they're what peak character design is

Denji from Chainsaw Man looks the same as Yusuke from Yu Yu Hakusho to you? Like, their art style?
Nagatoro's art style looks the same as The Vexations of a Shut In vampire Princesses?

What kind of cherry-picked examples is that? And decades apart too. You wanna say konosuba stands out somehow because it doesn’t look like Lupin the third?

          >Provides examples
          >claims cherry picking
AH I see. Never mind then. No further discussion is required.

We’re talking modern mainstream anime. That’s what the discussion is.

Most anime designs are "appealing/nice to look at" while are also pretty forgettable. Sure you get some classic stuff like sailor moon or goku but for the most part, even in good series, the designs are pretty boring. Not to say that they have to be iconic or super interesting, but still

I think there's plenty of good design work in both anime and cartoons. It's ultimately a matter of preference at the end though.

Did you really need to include Avatar? The good one? Should've used Korra.

Anime cannibalizes itself all the time, why shouldn't the Koreans that make western cartoons not do the same?

Everyone is copying someone else's art style.
