The Man who Fell to Earth

I’m begging you guys - you need to watch this show. It’s fricking amazing. Lead dude is giving the best alien performance I’ve seen since Jeff Bridges in Starman.

The story’s just miles beyond what I was expecting to get, and they use Faraday(the alien) to highlight what’s both beautiful about humanity as well as what’s inexplicable. On occasion, they even use him to highlight the “alien” behaviors we see among our tech/business “geniuses.” This is a show that is using its alien character to shed light on the human condition, and in my opinion, that is the very essence of good sci-fi.

Great show, and I will keep right on unashamedly “shilling” for it. Seven episodes in and there hasn’t been a slouch in the bunch. Great cast, great acting, great writing, and the special effects, while sparse, are tastefully done.

I’m glad you mentioned that. Kurtzman is a poor fit for Star Trek, but he’s spot-on perfect for this. My principal complaint about him is that he writes modern ideologies into Star Trek and they have no place there. Star Trek is supposed to be a utopian society. This is a show about a man trying to bring about one out of all our present bullshit.

          Anonymous

Not the way that Kurtzman writes it, which is why he’s a poor fit. Original Trek had a very bright, very optimistic message about humanity. All our present social dilemmas were projected onto alien cultures. Kurtzman couldn’t help himself and introduced elements that make it seem as if humanity never really “evolved” culturally beyond any of our present woes.

In all honesty, least amount of usual Cinemaphile bullshit here, the original is one of my favorite films because of the subject matter, tone, and Bowie at his best, who's my personal hero. I have not liked a single fricking thing Kurtzman has ever done, quite the opposite, and while the team seems solid on paper, I do not trust this at all to exist in the modern day. I do not expect it to cut such a deep, soulful, personal philosophical exploration like the original in lieu of being mired in serving as a mouthpiece for the creative team.

Plus, not on any of my myriad fricking streaming subscriptions, so that muddies it. I will say I'm surprised they actually put it in continuity and have Newton back, that's actually an interesting choice and almost makes me interested. That being said I already know how Bowie wanted the rest of it to go because that's what Lazarus was, not whatever this is. C'est la vie.

        Anonymous

I’m OP and a fan of the original, too. Never once has Kurtzman not let me down, and with each new episode, I’m terrified that this will be the one. That said, so far it’s had a bittersweet, perilously hopeful tone in contrast to the original, which largely revolved around the pitfalls of addiction. The intro to the show has us witness Faraday on-stage, very much the polished self-promoter, a far cry from the character as we’ve thus far witnessed him in the show, and that’s the central mystery of it - is that a fallen Faraday or merely the facade he and Newton have constructed to save us from ourselves? I find it fascinating.

              >Legion
Been meaning to work through it, got through the first couple episodes and loved it. If your taste trends along mine as much as it seems, I'd recommend Fargo Season 3 specifically. Lot of people shit on it, and exact opposite sort of tone, but same level of craft, has legitimate moments of emotion too, and a lot to say about evil in the modern world, way I read it.

                Anonymous

Awesome to hear that. I’ve been meaning to pick Fargo back up. Legion’s crazy weird, like “The Prisoner” levels of weird and I doubt it would be as enjoyable to someone who isn’t an old comics geek with a penchant for creative headcanonry, but the aesthetic alone is very nearly worth it. Hands down favorite episode is S02E01. I’ve lost count of how many times I’ve watched it. To me, it’s something of a masterpiece.

I agree. I still liked S3, but mainly because I like the dude who was playing Charles. In my opinion, he brought a warmth to the character that no one else has. His Charles just seems way more human and compassionate.

                Anonymous

Conveniently, I'm an old comics geek with an overactive imagination and a penchant for the strange too, so hey. Frankly I like more of what they did with David that what I read of him in the comics (Hard to get over that hair), at least from what I saw, so I do look forward to it.

On the subject if TMWFTE, I don't know how much you cared about the Bowie angle as much as the Sci-fi and philosophy, but if you can find a way to watch Lazarus, I'd recommend it. They did stream a filmed version of the original production a few years back, which I haven't had luck finding but haven't tried too hard. It's worth a watch, or at least read the script. It tackles a lot more about identity, grief, and accepting one's mortality while still continuing Newton's story in a way I found logical. Very much an inspection of Bowie himself and has his music in it, as a musical of course, so if you're a fan I'd say look into it. Very layered importance to me on that front, personally.

Fish-out-of-water takes this one about three-ish episodes in. From that point forward, it becomes about how he and Thomas Newton(Bill Nighy) are going to turn him into a figure that humanity can’t ignore, mainly by the benefit of Newton’s experience of humanity. Nighy’s killing it, by the way.

It is an enjoyable show so far, but it has 6 too many Blacks to be properly discussed here.
Black1 is a literal space bug who comes from an organized society. He yells at old people that they should all be dead if they are not serving a purpose and he yells at children for not following the instructions on lego.
Black2 is a smart but not yet sassy physics genius who burnt out after killing Black6, and now struggles to provide for Blacks3and4 while watching Black4 slowly die
Black3 is her daughter, smart but not talking like an adult.
Black4 is her father, jamaican, smart but cripple-dying, becomes less Black as the show continues
Black5 is her slightly sassy friend, but has only taken 10 or so minutes of airtime thank god.
Black6 is her dying boyfriend in a flashback.
    everyone else is white.
no alphabet people except CIA, no slavery alegories yet even though Black1 is from the worker caste on his home planet. It is an extension of the 70's movie with the same name and all white people, you can try to watch that if you are keen, but it is a bit of a slog. Rip Torn wiener warning.

Episode 2 introduces Kate Mulgrew and that William guy from westworld, as well as Bill Nighy but he is only in the show for 10 minutes tops and is portraying an ancient David Bowie.
    obligatory Black person

..yeah but on a scale of "white people bad!" to "jordan banana peele" how bad are the white people portrayed, blamed and shit on for no reason besides anti white racism? You see I really cant go without my daily hollywood dose of "frick all white people"

Not in the slightest. We have well-intentioned, guilt-ridden, alcoholic white people, uptight, super-hot corporate shark with daddy issue white people, opportunistic, back-stabbing CIA operative white people, earnest, just-doing-their-job CIA white people, half-crazed alien/fallen angel white people, and monolithic corporate giant white people.

No. The first two episodes are okay, but light on the woke stuff (cops screaming and holding a gun on a clearly deranged man who is of ZERO threat, and then the casual racism during the cop house). Third episode on goes full comedy woke (EVIL WHITE CIA MEN ARE CRAAAAAZY AND AN OMEGA butthole(S)). Just the antagonist forces are so fricking cartooney, the tone feels wrong.

The one that kills themself via bee stings was one of the guys experimenting on Newton. Probably more accurate to say crossdresser, but it was meant to be a female only commune.

OP, the source material has almost nothing to do with a sci-fi plot, it's just about a foreigner succumbing to the temptations the west offers. Is this theme maintained in the series? If not, I'm not watching.

      Anonymous

It is, but whether or not the “Westernized” alien has learned from his experience and is really using it to guide his fellow Anthean remains to be seen. It’s pretty fricking compelling.
