It actually needed much more than that. The studio gets much less from international box offices, so when you factor in that a greater proportion of the total box office was from theaters abroad, they needed like $500M - $600M to break even.

They tried to simplify the way they taught math to little kids so black kids would learn more. It was handled very poorly and left the kids even more confused.

It’s based on the idea of teaching kids mental tricks to do math faster in their head instead of actual math. It’s all stuff that should only be talked about after a real education in math is accomplished, but ivory tower academics thought it might be a possible way to get nonwhites to understand math better

Where's the proof that it needed to make $400 million? That always gets posted but never sourced, it sounds like cope honestly.

Generally a movie needs to make around 2.5x times its budget to breakeven because theaters take around half (less for opening weekend and more as the movie plays)
Of course budget numbers are given by the studios to the trades and we never really know if they're higher or lower, so it's all just a guess.

      Anonymous

$400 million is under estimating how much money this film needed to gross to be profitable. This movie was mostly filmed in the UK. In order to qualify for a UK subsidy, they had to publish how much they spent in the UK in public filings - $274.8 million USD. The UK government gave them a $55 million dollar subsidy, so the net spending was just under $220 million. Movie theaters take approximately half the gross, so it would need roughly $440 million to just cover the UK production costs.

Note that does not include any post production work done outside of the UK, or any of the marketing costs, which of course drive the break even point higher.

This is a great thing for her! Now she can say she's flopped in a massive budget game, a massive budget television show, and a massive budget movie! Not many characters can say they got three chances with stupidly huge budgets and they all cratered. Real trendsetter right here!

This character is literally poison is every media she's in. Her TV show failed, her movie failed, her video game failed. Her comics have been cancelled and relaunched multiple times despite the fact that she's only been around for a decade. But Marvel really thinks she's their future. Their latest gamble is making her a mutant by the way.

I dunno how old she is, presuming over 18 here - if there was ONE scene where she's shown semi nude or revealing in any way, the dregs of the internet would have salivated over her pudgy poo thunder thighs enough to put this movie profitable

Because in a movie franchise a movie doesn't make money on their own merits. It was always judged using a basis of how good the previous movie did. The best example is The Last Jedi, a lot of the tickets solds were from fans expecting something of the Force Awaken.
In the case of Marvels, after turds like Ant Man 3, people have little incentive to give it a try.

I don't care strongly about Captain Marvel as a character, I have no fricking clue who the other two are, it doesn't seem to have any particularly interesting style or angle beyond generic MCU, and I already know it's not an important part of some larger narrative. I might catch it on streaming if there's nothing else on but I would never consider going to see it in the kinoplex in a million years.

Because they made a female targeted movie in a genre women do not like. The only times women ever really watch marvel is when their boyfriend/husband/male family members are watching it. Obviously men aren’t interested in watching a shitty woke movie starring a bunch of ugly feminists in nascar suits so they didn’t see it, and since men didn’t see it neither did women. If you want female superheroes to be successful you have to make them attractive to men both looks and personality wise. Not every movie will be the last movie to be released in a franchise about to release the most hyped and anticipated movie of all time.
