It was never stated one way or the other, and she was drawn racially ambiguous enough that people have been arguing about whether she was supposed to be asian or white since the book started. Either way it literally does not matter, because being (or not being) asian never once comes into play in any way in the series.
It's actually kind of funny because they didn't really change Mark's design at all in the show (other than the art style differences) but with his mom they absolutely yellowed her up and really tried to play up stereotypical asian features.
Why would they need to change his design? He's only half asian and Viltrumite genes tend to dominate anyway

I seem to recall when I first read some of Azzarello's Hellblazer run I couldn't get into it, but when I came back to it and read most of it together I liked it a lot more

Azz's Hellblazer is weird. Conceptually I like a lot of it (Constantine in prison Shawshank style sounds incredible; as does Freezes Over where he's trapped in a snowstorm with some civilians and a couple of murderous criminals on the run from the law) but in execution it's just not very good. Best issue is probably the one where he hitchhikes and comments on all the roadkill. Well plotted and does a decent job of building tension.
