Before the MCU if you were to stop random people on the street how many of them could even easily name 10 Marvel superheroes?
it would have been:
spider-man
hulk
wolverine
x-men
fantstic four
venom
captain america or avengers
punisher
ghost rider
I mean, DP still popular pre-movie
I doubt they would get to 10, but the top 5 would have been something along hte lines of
Spider-Man
Wolverine
Storm
Hulk
Rogue
Spider-Man, Hulk, a decent number of people giving some of the X-Men (Wolverine being the most common) and maybe if it is the period of the 2000s films a fair number of people saying Fantastic Four and Daredevil. You are also going to get a lot of people saying stuff like 'Wonder Woman?'
How far back? 2000-2008, they may say Spider-Man, Hulk, Wolverine but also possibly Ghost Rider and Punisher (because the 90s kids were in their 20s by then, and GR and Punisher had films in that time). Maybe Rogue, Storm and Cyclops because the Singer films were fresh in their mind.
Deadpool was popular but he didn't get really big until the later part of the 00s

Its pretty wild just how popular Scarlet Witch got thanks to Wandavision, like she boomed in popularity and could have easily been the MCU's top girl hero they were looking for. If you went to a comic con or whatever the amount of people cosplaying Wanda was insane. But she wasn't Captain Marvel who they're trying to push. So she got turned evil and killed. Geniu move.
Elizabeth Olsen was also tired of playing the character and clearly wanted out
