The problem is that the DC cinematic universe is a total mess.
You'd rightfully assume this is a part of some larger story (even if it isn't) but it's not clear what the current state of the DCU is. Is this a start of a new string of movies, is it a standalone, if it's a part of the previous string of movies then which characters are relevant/carried over, if any. If not then why not. Do I need to know anything going in?
Is it going to try to lean on other movies to be understandable?
Is the tone going to be completely different from the previous DCU movies?
Etc..

I liked the movie but something I'm tired of is characters in the DC universe name dropping Superman/Batman but it doesn't feel like they legitimately exist in the same universe. Superman doesn't notice some human being flung into the atmosphere, or a giant island fight, or does he even know or care what the scarab is?

MCU had a head start and the audience was craving more fun superhero movies.
Snyder instead made ones that were tonally close to his Watchmen adaptation full of sulking depressed characters that are always on the verge of tears or just act constipated all the time.
At first the box office results were okay because the hype for superhero movies was just that effective, but as soon as the audience realized what he's selling, the profits dropped off dramatically.
That's why they gave him the boot.
Also, Snyder is a complete moron when it comes to any kind of planning or forethought.
He has Superman go through his origin story and then the very NEXT thing he does is already fast-forward to the "Death of Superman" bit, which makes zero sense since we never actually saw him BE Superman for any proper length of time. His "death" therefore has no impact and his entire arc is compressed into nothing serviceable.
Same thing with Batman, a character that's really hard to frick up, but he managed it by having him immediately appear in his DKR mode, which again makes zero sense since DKR was relevant as a sort of "end game" for Batman.
He just basically picked out the most "grimdark" of character moments for both Superman and Batman and compressed them into the first thing the characters do, so the entire thing is fricked from the get-go.
The less I say about Wonder Woman [middle-eastern chanting sound bit plays] the better.

Snyder did frick up, especially rushing to already be in phase 2 or 3 of the universe too soon and having a Superman origin trilogy instead of movie which left him unfished or untrue to the comics for way too long in the public's eye. I will defend the grimdark decision though. I think he knew the colorful world of one liners was something DC would never be the best at so rather than gunning for being discount MCU he went in a different direction. Make the comparison apples and oranges so one would never be better than the other or in as direct competition.
But audiences are straight up rejecting the "fun" DC superhero movies.
That's because at that point DCU is/was a tonal mess and you don't even know what kind of movies you're walking into.
For comparison MCU movies, even though they're slop, are fairly consistent across the board so you DO know what you're getting.

Yes, what really killed the DCEU was the Wonder Woman cast, she was supposed to be the guide that was going to bring in the women and the effect was the opposite if Gunn follows the MCU style which is also bad, things will only get worse or they will follow the comics and not the ones of today but the comics of the 80s, and 90s or they will continue to flop
