It’s far more interesting if he’s the devil. Remember Balkin was trying to summon him and Corso showed up.

          Anonymous

that would mean Balkin's book was enough from the start and the entire mystery and search for the other books was pointless, the LCF stuff was pointless, Balkan burning alive with the new page arrangement doesn't make sense, the last of the nine pages being found in the Spanish twins' shop was pointless. The whole thing becomes moronic.

            Anonymous

Think less literally. Corso didn’t come into existence because of the ritual. He has been around. Balkan tried to summon him and Corso (not knowing he was the devil) sensed this was his chance to gather the map to the ninth gate.

It could've been a top tier noir kino on the level of Chinatown and Rosemary's Baby but Polanski didn't take it seriously and by the end it basically becomes a self-parody. What you get is a movie with a cool story and comfy visual aesthetic but with a completely uneven tone. It's boring and uninteresting. I would really like to see this movie remade by someone who cares

Agreed. The pacing in the third act feels really off. But also I think the atmosphere is kinda lacking the whole movie, it should have had a dark, rainy, Gothic atmosphere, but it doesn't, it's just kinda plain
