But as Agent Smith explains in the movie, that had its own problems and they settled on an imperfect but realistic recreation of the 90s as the goldilocks zone for harvesting humans. At no point did the machines give a single flying frick what the humans thought about any of this and they certainly weren't factoring nicety into their decision making.
