Why has this movie not entered the cultural lexicon? I never hear anyone mention it, no memes, etc.

I personally enjoyed the film.

It's a good movie, but what culturally did it say? Really doesn't have much quotable material.

I liked the book better even if it is goofier and this is a top tier adaptation (and in some ways, an improvement)

The prestige is good. Solid 8 or 9 out of 10. Once I saw my dad naked and he had a really fat wiener, but that's unrelated. I always get the prestige and the illusionist mixed up, but the prestige is definitely better.

No. You misdunderstand how memes are used, they're not a modern thing. Implying only zoomies use memes is brain rot.

Lacks rewatchability, no outstanding performances, no outstanding scenes, no outstanding lines. Just an overall good movie, but just nothing about it stands out and if you know the TWEEEEEST then it lacks the mystery that carries the entire film forward.

Liked some of the production designs, but I am a sucker for victorian architecture.

I mean it is at least worth a second watch, because the good acting let'a you tell which is which in each scene.

I completely disagree and I’m not going to dissect why but I hardly ever want to rewatch a movie

      >Lacks rewatchability

This might be the dumbest thing I’ve ever seen anybody write on the internet and I was born in 1991. How can you say that about one of few films literally designed to watch twice? It’s a different movie on the second watch. Infact let me tell you why you said it - because you’re a stupid fricking moron.

The problem with art of film making, and more specifically the idiotic viewers like you, is that there’s a difference between movies that are made for entertainment and profit vs movies that define and push the art form. You don’t know the difference as a shallow viewer.

Lawrence of Arabia, which neither of you have watched, is the greatest movie of all time that you will never be able to grasp even if you were forced to watch it. You would think it’s a low value movie because it didn’t entertain your rotten tiktok r*ddit brains. It can’t really be quoted or turned into memes. Just like the prestige. Its brilliance is lost on you.

Nolan's The Game but he holds himself at higher regard with lofty ambitions

Even at his very best, Nolan has trouble intentionally "entering the cultural lexicon". Memento has the most powerful visual theme of writing stuff on yourself to remember it. Ever since, he's been searching for that signature idea. Bale, Ledger, and Tom Hardy are the most distinctive parts of Nolan.

What do you mean cultural lexicon? It's considered THE MOVIE about magicians.

I sincerely hope you're not saying this movie doesn't have cultural impact because twitter and reddit aren't quoting quips from it?

It has 1M+ reviews on IMDB. My point was that it seems almost irrelevant, to the point it is barely discussed. It has phenomenal performances by the cast and a great coherent story.

So many other films from the 2000s have been memed into the cultural consciousness because of their importance.

Some in this thread don't actually know what a meme is so when they the word they immediately think of skibdi toilet from tiktok or hey just say "huuurrebuuur zoomurrrsss bhuuuuurrrr".

        >. My point was that it seems almost irrelevant, to the point it is barely discussed. It has phenomenal performances by the cast and a great coherent story.
It's discussed everyday to the point where people now treat it as Nolan's best film. Back when it was released it had lukewarm reviews and was a modest boxoffice success. Today it's treated as Nolan's best when he has ultra popular films like TDK and Inception in his filmmography.

To back you up a bit.
          >The film has grown in stature since its release.[54][55][56] In 2009, The A.V. Club named The Prestige as one of the best films of the 2000s.[57] The film was included in American Cinematographer's "Best-Shot Film of 1998-2008" list, ranking at 36. More than 17,000 people around the world participated in the final vote.[58] In 2020, Empire magazine ranked it among "The 100 Greatest Movies Of The 21st Century".[

Was the twist that he was killing himself and lived through his clones, or was he killing the clones, i was never clear on that part?

He killed himself every time. He was so dedicated to the performance he was willing to die for it. The replicated Hugh jack man was brand new.

      >i was never clear on that part?
Neither was the Hugh Jackman character. That’s why he says it’s a huge sacrifice, never knowing if he’ll be the transported man or the one in the box.

why didn't borden and fallon simply only use their transportation trick for the show only? why bother with all the autism and put sarah through all that ordeal? AND what was the point of sharing their lives before the introduction of the transported man??

      Anonymous

They didn't only use it for the show because the point of the trick/illusion was the total secrecy and the spectacle of performance.

Borden comes to this realization once he finally figures out the old Chinese guys trick for the ball. It dawns on him that the performance must be done at all times, the charade must continue, even at the cost of damaging someone he loves.

Then comes to Angiers, he couldn't possibly figure out the sleight of hand Borden and Fallon were using. He goes crazy to the point he finds a replicating machine and voluntarily kills himself every night, all for the adulation of the crowd, and as a way to one up Borden.

It's all about how dedicated one is to their craft.

but what was the point of that total dedication even prior to the transportation trick?

This is backwards, he immediately recognises that the Chinaman is faking it all the time because the Bordens have been doing the same for years. He came up with it as a child and had the disappearing trick planned out years ahead
