The problem with Apu

Genuinely don’t understand how this became a thing

Indians do own a lot of corner stores. Same as East Asians. They also often speak in heavily accented english

Why is this some horrible stereotype that’s killing people?

Take note of the fact the all this from the man of the documentary was a nobody, and though this and himself was panned and mocked and given the fairmans treatment, he still won with the utilization of the woke card.

The media and folks without a doubt or care only to be patrollers of the annoying PC crowd and everything just took his word with “apu bad, impressions of other people across the world bad” makes it a scene to just witness in dumbfounded appallment

      >What's wrong with having an accent?
Those outrages are always caused by white sheltered anglo women that never even learned a second language to begin with so all they say about immigrants and other minorities is bullshit they have no fricking idea about.
They also pull that shit with mental illnesses and shit, like prohibiting media from associating autism with anything bad when every autist will tell you about the issues they have and how impossible it is for them to socialize. They same people will also complain about stereotypes but force all non-whites or gays into the same so-called flawless stereotypes like the "voice of reason" and other shitty roles that nobody likes.

No, a few I've spoken to think that being autistic is superior, that neurotypicals are fundamentally irrational, and that cognitive empathy is a delusion. Not most, but some, and it's such a fundamentally autistic viewpoint that it must be original to them.

as someone who's currently trying to get a us visa, indians are flooding into us like crazy and taking up all the spots because there's so fricking much of them. their country is a total shithole where regardless of the position they're going to get paid pennies, but a lot of them are intelligent and talented.

Indians heard about israeli stereoypes and said "that rocks". They're also hilariously racist but still adept at using the language and dynamics of antiracism to advance themselves and their kin while displacing competition. With a couple exceptions, every Indian I've ever met thats identified as a Brahmin has been a complete c**t, all very tall tho

Chinese and Indian immigrant families tend to push their kids really hard. They come to America for opportunity and find absolute shit so they take crappy jobs. They have kids and push the everloving shit out of them to excel in academics because they know that will give them more opportunities. Said kids then go into fields such as engineering/medicine/computer science/etc.
People then look at the influx of Asian/Indian individuals in those fields and blame affirmative action.

You're right...there are more Indians in positions of power in various industries these days, but it has more to do with busting ass from a young age than any sort of rigged system.

Affirmative action actually hurts Asians and Indians. They're considered a privileged class by the government in that specific context. But not in the context of minority-targeted business loans, for some reason.

    >One of these Indian kids becomes a mediocre comedian
    >Decides to use the fact he was called Apu in a derogatory way to make some attention seeking documentary about Apu being a bad stereotype
    >Doesn't actually hate Apu, he likes the Simpsons but still wants the attention and hopefully to be given a chance to voice the character so Apu has an "authentic" Indian voice
    >Instead Apu is just removed from the show, the result that no one wanted

      >Are called Apu as he's the most culturally relevant Indian to most kids
this is pretty much how all 'slurs' and other 'offensive' terms start out

      >be not offensive
      >become old and/or get used in an offensive matter occasionally by dumb kids
      >become offensive
      >get switched to something new
      >new term repeats the cycle
nothing is offensive until it is, words like "Black" "spastic" "indian (american)" "moronic" etc didnt start out as offensive, they became that way because idiots were using em to make fun of someone, or they just got old is all

        Anonymous

I agree with the form the cycle takes, but not that it's perpetuated by children. Any identifier commonly used in anger or derision becomes a slur over time, that's just how language works, but it's not little kids or occasional usage that made Germans take offence at being called cabbages for example, it was millions of men with guns. It's dicey to call a German a kraut to this day, yet the English and French merrily call each other roast beef and frogs respectively even though it's the exact same thing, because there hasn't been the hatred to give it meaning for a couple centuries or so.

    >that's killing people
That wasn't what was being said you dishonest moron. The problem was that the only pop culture figure Indians had at the time was Apu and he shaped perceptions and expectations in such a way that directors would tell Indian actors to sound like Apu. The kicker is that Apu's voice is a white man's impression of an older white guy's Indian impression. The point of the documentary is that the damage has been done, we're doing better now and Apu is proof that representation matters.

Apu being "quietly retired" from The Simpsons happened two years before the documentary came out. He didn't change anything.

He had a very memorable development for a status quo show, from just a clerk they knew on passing, to a family friend, his background as a programmer, that he's not an employee but actually owns the Kwik-E-Mart on springfield after investing on the franchise, his marriage, fatherhood, fall from grace by cheating and recovery.

He was popular enough he was one of the playable characters in Hit and Run and it's a big reason why LatAm places often discuss they hope they never remake that game as it'd be censored to appease "progres gringos".

wasn't he always an owner? Thats the entire reason that indians work at convenience stores, either they own it or they work there for free because their family owns it. The entire 'fired and replaced by James Woods' plotline can sort of be ignored as the Simpsons has never taken its continuity seriously, and even then IRL you can lose your franchise for not following the rules anyways. That episode is a fantastic Apu episode btw.

Apu certainly got a better look than most indian/asian stereotypes of the time as he was portrayed as attractive and successful with women.
