But Private Pyle literally kills the drill Sargeant AND himself. He died a killer.
contrarian 🙂
I enjoyed FMJ but I really feel like the true Vietnam film has to be Platoon.
FMJ for me, is too light hearted in many ways, it's like watching Tour of Duty. And the main guy just feels a bit too like he's the special sensitive soul viewing the horrors of war with disdain.
Charlie Sheen starts off like that in Platoon, annd ultimately embraces his violent and evil side in the final battle in order to survive. Both Barnes and Willem Dafoe pull him in either direction, both philosophies are useful. Platoon shows you really aren't some special sensitive soul. You're a cog in a machine and the best you can hope for is to live through it and try to rebuild your life afterwards. FMJ it's like a holiday and everyone comes back later.
The sniper scene in FMJ is brutal, but scenes as bad as that happen more than once in Platoon, and they don't always find the guy at the end. Also Kubrick was a pudgy folk singer from an easy country whereas Oliver Stone actually went to vietnam and did some fighting
>And the main guy just feels a bit too like he's the special sensitive soul viewing the horrors of war with disdain.
Do you not remember the end of the movie?
> FMJ it's like a holiday and everyone comes back later.
Oh, I guess not lol.
yeah yeah, he gets all teary and shoots that chick, but he only shoots her out of pity, he euthanizes her. He doesn't shoot her as an act of revenge, he's trying to do the "right" thing, he isn't actually being "hardcore" like they say, he's disgusted with himself.
>he gets all teary and shoots that chick
He doesn't tear up at all. He gets cold as frick and accepts, perhaps even embraces the harsh reality of war. The monolouge during the mickey mouse song part confirms this.
Joker and the boys stormed that building to get revenge, the reality was just more horrifying than he ever expected. He'd be disgusted with himself regardless of his decision, but he chose to be a man, looked reality in the eyes and pulled the trigger. Hardcore isn't about sadism, it's about walking into hell and doing your job.
Platroon sucks. If you want realism I had a real life vietnam vet tell me back in the 90s that Hamburger Hill was the most realistic movie about it.
>Hamburger Hill was the most realistic movie about it.
besides this dummy it is pretty authentic
You do realize that not everyone in Vietnam spent every single day humping through jungles, right?
He did want to be "the first kid on (his) block to have a confirmed kill", he has the desire to be that hardcore guy.
But his confirmed kill ended up being the euthanizing of a little girl.
It's about tearing down the image of the heroic warrior that they all went into it with, and revealing the true cringe of it all, that they're just dopey kids in over their heads who don't know what they've gotten themselves into, but have to do what they have to do.
I'm not saying at all that I disliked FMJ, I liked it a lot, I just felt that Platoon had a more interesting narrative that felt less cliche to me.
Platoon felt the the Hollywood TV movie of the week version to me, FMJ is way more interesting and much less conventional or "cliched"
I only watch the first half and then switch it off after
Love to see urban warfare in Vietnam instead of a jungle full of bare-asses. Feels like a post-apocalypse movie, looks nothing like any other VIetnam movie, but it's still immediately identifiable. Kinda like "New York" in Eyes Wide Shut. Kubrick is very musical in his location scouting, he can capture a feeling without resorting to the obvious.
Kek, I never thought I would live to see the day a fa/tv/irgin would express a patrician opinion on here and not just go with the midwit "da 1rst halve was da onbly good halve" flow
My favorite part.

WHO'S THE SLIMY LITTLE COMMUNIST SHIT TWINKLE-TOED wienerSUCKER DOWN HERE, WHO JUST SIGNED HIS OWN DEATH WARRANT?!
>tfw the best vietnam war movie is barely even a vietnam war movie
It's like 70% Vietnam, and no one ever argues the US action in surrounding countries was part of a different war.
The most realistic depiction (in fiction) of the conflict in Vietnam, most of the fighting was in or near urban areas, reg ppl get the idea from shitty action movies like Platoon that US soldiers were just wandering around in the jungle for 10 years
The whole thing was good.
reddit is thinking the movie has two acts. Cinemaphile is realizing it's three
