I like how Duck Dodgers did it where Dodgers was either incompetent or an untouchable god and it depended on whether what was more amusing. Gadget could bumble about but pick up on something that allows him to save the day or purposely pulls out a deus ex machina gadget to save the day.
honestly yeah i think it'd have been cool if Gadget could be competent if he wanted to, have some actual Ws of his own that aren't cause of Penny and Brain.

That was basically the point of that CG Inspector Gadget show from years ago. Gadget was an even more flanderized version of himself, but, by the end, even if Penny solves the mistery, it's still Gadget who saves the day.

if they ever did a decent 2d modern reboot I would love it if they made it for slightly older audiences. and where gadget is still an idiot most of the time, but when the chips are down, he isn't being clumsy, and his gadgets are working properly they give him moments where he is genuinely a really great detective or has some badass moments, then when the big bad for the episode is dealt with he goes back to tripping over his own feet.
like there are moments where we see him at his full potential and they are somewhat rare so it makes it that when he does go all out and starts thinking on the fly it's even cooler.

The fact that he was a moron was great because gave Penny, the lovely lovely Penny, plenty of chances of doing things and being the hero.

Inspector Gadget was more a pastiche of Maxwell Smart and Inspector Clouseau, but yeah Don Addams brought a fair bit of Max into Gadget...along with all the silly spy gadgets.
its not really a parody. Get Smart is already a parody. its just taking that character and giving him gadgets. its like if someone gave austin powers a jet pack for a cartoon, its not a parody of austin powers.

every 4th or 7th episode be a real win for him would have been better. Penny always secretly solving everything was kind of BS and made the show repetitive.

It would have been better if the plots weren't so repetitive. I get that kid cartoons used the same formula BUT Gadget really repeated itself.
They should have mixed it up a bit more.
