The show was ALWAYS written by Californian high society leftists with a clean disdain for deep America, not just rural south but midwestern and east coast too. They just knew how to write better jokes back then.

weed was one of those things that people simply sensed was no good but couldn't prove what... it wasn't until just recently that we discovered it's more addictive than alcohol or cigarettes and causes mental psychosis
there's plenty of things humans have historically simply noticed or felt that were true, but couldn't prove it, and science convinced them their senses don't matter and they shouldn't act on their beliefs unless they have a machine spitting out a piece of paper that says their theories have been fact checked
if we thought like that, we never would've figured out agriculture or animal breeding, nobody explained to us why putting plant in the soil produce more plant, we just noticed. nobody told us that germs and bacteria cause illnesses and that certain plants have remedial qualities that fight those diseases by heightening our immune system or producing compounds thay fight inflammation or kill the bacteria in our body, we just noticed that sometimes unga bunga grog get sick, but grog eat leaf and he get not sick! is good, now grog eat leaf when sick and he feel good.
