The State of DC

Hear me out, I am not trying to troll or start a fight, I have a genuine inquiry.

Is DC Comics okay?

I mean, their movies keep bombing horribly and have no profit. Even Michael Keaton Batman couldn’t save the DCEU. Their shows are either cancelled or get no views. The Suicide Squad video game was a PR disaster and made fun of by everyone. The DTV animated movies have had their budgets slashed. The only cartoon they have is Teen Titans Go, with Superman being moved to Adult Swim and Abrams Batman show moved to Amazon. Their comics sell less than Marvel and Manga and most aren’t even in the top 100.

And now WB is selling off DC Comics music (like music from the Batman movies) because Flash didn’t make the billion they were hoping for.

Is DC Comics safe? Is DC Comics going to make it? How do they recover?

The Flash had Batman and bombed.
The Batman underperformed and made less than Dr Strange 2.
And Tom King showed the Batman comic isn’t invincible. Like when Immortal Hulk outsold Batman.
Batman can’t keep DC afloat forever.

        >The Batman underperformed and made less than Dr Strange 2.
Yeah but it was also made for a lot less money than an MCU movie. Really that's a Batman movies biggest strength, because you don't need to have a big CGI blowout with the bad guy at the end you're pretty much guaranteed to make money on the brand name alone.

It had the same budget as Dr Strange 2

DC needs people with good vision and understanding of the characters and proper financial backing. They have neither.

The DC Comics IPs are safe, they have some of the most recognizable fictional characters in media. DC Comics as a comic book publishing company is not though. Warner Bros Discovery is deep in debt and the comic book publishing just isn't that important to the company.

What saves them is being dirt cheap. Ironically the #comicsbrokeme people would be the reason comics die because they’d become unsustainable.

If Superman Legacy bombs then the future is going to be bleak. While I don't think they will ever sell Batman or Supes. But I can see them begin selling of a lot of their D and C list icons. Characters like The Atom, Firestorm and Animal Man are the ones we should be worried for.

I don’t have faith in Superman Legacy because Gunn is shoving too many characters into the movie. And it feels like to will just be an ad for The Authority than an actual Superman movie.

Black person you’re shitting on something based off bullshit rumors started on Cinemaphile. Superman hasn’t even been cast yet maybe wait for the ink to dry on the script before deciding it’s just an ad for the authority

More likely they'd make a deal with another studio to lease out their characters. Like the deal Fox had with Disney bought the rights to them, or the current deal Sony has with disney for rights to spider-man. They'd lease out the rights for a Superman or Batman trilogy, and only a trilogy out to someone smaller like Blumhouse for example, and agree to split the profits. Because at least then they'd be making some money off these characters rather than no money at all.

The problem is that WB keeps panicking too much and doesn’t stick to a plan. They have no commitment. I expect Gunn to be fired because Superman Legacy didn’t make 2 billion dollars.

They've been in deep trouble for a while in that regard because for better or worse they fired their EiC, and now they have no true direction.

DC needs to take a break for five years then come back. Granted that isn’t possible since WBD is bleeding money but still. DC Comics has a bad image now and is considered bad and a joke by the general population. They should focus on quality over quantity.

      >DC needs to take a break for five years then come back.
By then the Superhero movie trend will be over and nobody will be going to go see a new Superman movie.

If Superman Legacy bombs then the future is going to be bleak. While I don't think they will ever sell Batman or Supes. But I can see them begin selling of a lot of their D and C list icons. Characters like The Atom, Firestorm and Animal Man are the ones we should be worried for.

Gunn is making the same mistakes DC made the first time with rushing the Batman Superman crossover instead of giving Superman a standalone origin story or at least strong standalone entry without any crossover from the wider DC universe

It is hard to say as DC is in this weird place where they have a rather dedicated following. Been seeing a lot of DC centered YouTube channels pop up lately, mainly centered around the DCAU and Teen Titans (2003).

I went to a con a few months ago and DC was definitely more prevalent than Marvel, mainly having a frick ton of Ravens and Robins wandering around.

Hell, I have had a usual MCU normie explain to me how Joker and The Batman are 'real films'.

DC has way more staying power than Marvel, they really just need a new DCAU, or something that can at least invoke 90s/00s DC.

There is a reason I specified the DCAU. That and Titans 2003 have lasted way past their finales. Same can be said for Batman Arkham, Injustice, The Batman, and Brave & The Bold.

It is sad how DC never capitalizes on any of this. If anything, shit like Suicide Squad practically works to frick them over.

I say this as a DC fan: They had a good run but if they dropped off the face of the earth tomorrow, I wouldn't shed too many tears. Their current media, be they film or comics, are utter garbage.
Are there currently decent runs? Yeah, probably, but the bad is really starting to outweigh the good.
Just stick with the decent, or at least better comics, films, and shows of the past. There's more than enough to last for years.

The universal core appeal is still there. Marvel characters have successfully modernized to keep up with the times without feeling antiquated.

The only Marvel characters that have floundered are some of the old Golden Age characters
