It's one of those problematic elements of the lore, chief among them being the evil nature of orcs and whether they can be saved.

Fingolfin fought Morgoth in single combat at the gates of Angmar, but it wasn't overly long, Tolkien describes only a few exchanges. But yes he did permanently wound Morgoth's leg before he was killed from his throat being crushed under Morgoth's foot.
As an aside, I always find it funny how so much artwork depicts Morgoth being absolutely gigantic compared to Fingolfin, when Tolkien specifically writes that Morgoth threw him to the ground and stepped on his neck.
